Two people have been wounded and one killed in a shootout outside a Walmart in Washington state, after an armed gunman attempted -but failed- to hijack a auto, whose driver also happened to be armed.

Another woman who was shopping with her children told the network that they all fled the shop and hid behind a parked auto.

At the roundabout, they learned an armed man had tried to carjack two vehicles, injuring a 16-year-old girl in the process, though not seriously.

While police said the shooting happened outside the Walmart, witnesses reported they could hear the shots from inside the store, which caused chaos and panic inside the retail outlet.

An active investigation was underway at multiple scenes at or around the Tumwater Walmart, all believed to be related to the incident. He was attempting to carjack a second vehicle in the parking lot when the armed bystander intervened.

Two bystanders outside the store drew their weapons and at least one of them fatally shot the gunman, Wohl told the Olympian.

Police say the suspect then tried yet another carjacking in the parking lot, but was approached by two armed civilians.

Wohl said authorities do not yet know anything about the gunman and could not reveal any identifying details. One victim was shot twice and flown to a hospital in critical condition.

The action inside the store set off fears of a possible mass shooting.

"All of a sudden, you hear this pop or a crash sound.About 15 to 20 seconds maybe even later, another sound exactly the same", said John Gerasimczyk.

"There were three civilians going after him to shoot him and two of them had their guns up and then the third guy shot him through the window of the vehicle", she told KIRO-TV.

Caitlyn Wallner told the paper a similar story.

"I looked over and saw hundreds of people running out". She heard "pop, pop, pop", and a man yelling "there's a guy shooting".

Shots were fired at the Walmart in Tumwater at about 5pm local time (1am BST), according to reports. "This (suspect) could have taken out more people, wounded or killed", said witness Brian Adams.
