Border Patrol detains immigrant families crossing US-Mexico border

Carrying a "Families Belong Together" banner, the mothers sat on the ground and nursed their babies in the courtyard in front of the New Jersey headquarters of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Trump has also claimed that he's merely enforcing an Obama-era policy, but it is his White House policies that are criminalising border crossings to this extent and triggering family break-ups.

More: Why are immigrant children being separated from parents?

The Trump order, an unusual reversal by him, moves parents with children to the front of the line for immigration proceedings but it does not end a 10-week-old "zero tolerance" policy that calls for prosecution of immigrants crossing the border illegally under the country's criminal entry statute.

Mr Sessions announced a "zero-tolerance" policy to criminally charge and jail undocumented border crossers. Public outcry is mounting over the family separations, but so far, there's no clear roadmap for Thursday voting on the emotional issue dividing Republicans. She has had several private conversations with her husband, pushing him to do all he can to keep families at the border intact, whether via a legislative route, or acting alone to stop the process, the official said. "But we also don't want families to be locked up in internment centers in America".

He did not immediately provide details of the bill, but said it resolves the issue of so-called Dreamers, undocumented adult migrants who entered the U.S. as children, "in a very elegant way".

Trump's order also seeks to modify the terms of the latest settlement on the 1997 Flores case, which prohibits the government from keeping migrant children in detention for more than 20 days.

"The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility", he said on Monday.

"The border is just as tough".

"But we have to do more than say 'this isn't who we are.' We have to prove it - through our policies, our laws, our actions, and our votes", he concluded. She also worries that it's even more hard for families to pursue asylum claims while they are in federal detention.

But Justice Department officials have huddled since Wednesday morning working on an executive order for the President to sign that will address the separation of families, according to a source familiar with the plans.

It comes amid widespread condemnation of President Trump's zero-tolerance policy on migrants at the U.S. southern border after emotive footage showed deeply distressed children crying for their families.

"We're going to have very strong borders, but we're going to keep families together", he said.

The departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to HuffPost's requests for clarification on Wednesday.

As children can not legally be jailed with their parents, they are kept in separate facilities. The House is considering two immigration bills, although neither dealt in particular with the family separation policy.

Trump did not give a date for when the event would be rescheduled. First Lady Melania Trump encouraged Trump to act on his own if Congress wasn't able to, a White House official said.

President Donald Trump speaks during a roundtable discussion on protecting American workers in Duluth, Minn., Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

"Some of the members wanted to make sure the president is very visible in his support for both bills", said Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., the chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, which makes up more than half the GOP majority.
