Republicans Want to Talk About Taxes – but Trump Keeps Changing the Subject Yuri Gripas

President Donald Trump has vowed to secure the US' global borders and prevent people from illegally entering America, and said that he wants only those based on merit to come inside the country, amid a major immigration row.

Thursday, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey told an audience in London the family separations could be the president's most harmful misstep yet - and suggested Trump is trying to dodge the matter.

But president showed no sign of softening.

The Senate, though, does "like their traditions", but "they aren't getting anything done", said McCaul.

There were also signs that the administration was dialing back, at least for now, its "zero tolerance" policy of prosecuting all adults caught crossing into the US illegally.

Government lawyers will "prosecute adults who cross our border illegally instead of claiming asylum at any port of entry", Sarah Isgur Flores, a Justice Department spokeswoman, said Thursday in a statement.

Merida-Galicia, who is being held in California, is just one of many incarcerated immigrant mothers whose attorneys tell similar stories about chaotic situations in which the mothers don't know where their children have been taken or how to contact them.

In a brief statement, spokesman Lt. Col. Jamie Davis says this is part of "prudent planning" in case the Department of Homeland Security asks for the Pentagon's help.

China to 'fight back' against any threatened United States tariffs
The initial list of 1,102 Chinese products facing tariffs, covering 28 closely printed pages, was issued June 15. The Trump administration said Friday that it will impose a 25% tariff on $50 billion of Chinese exports.

In Texas alone, within the last seven years, more than a quarter million criminal aliens have been arrested and charged with over 600,000 criminal offenses, he said. Led by Curbelo and Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., many are from states with large populations of young "Dreamer" immigrants who now face deportation threats under Trump's decision to end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. In some courts, the average wait for an immigration hearing was over 1400 days; some hearings are being scheduled beyond 2021 before an available slot on the docket is found. It was unclear how numerous children were still being detained with their families. His order seemed to stem some of the urgency for Congress to act.

His advice is likely to kill current efforts to pass a measure that had little chance of succeeding.

Republicans, who control the US Congress, are under intense pressure to address the issue of illegal immigration, but lawmakers failed Thursday to advance either of two bills in a sign of stubborn party divisions.

Ever Castillo, left, and his family, immigrants from Honduras, are escorted back across the border by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents Thursday, June 21, 2018, in Hildalgo, Texas.

"Elect more Republicans in November and we will pass the finest, fairest and most comprehensive Immigration Bills anywhere in the world", Trump said on Twitter. Hours later Republican leaders postponed final voting on what was billed as a compromise immigration package until next week as negotiators made a last-ditch push for support. But Ryan believes Trump would need to veto that bill, and as his speakership winds down he's defending the president from having to cross that threshold.

I think we're advancing the cause even if something doesn't pass.

The image, taken by award-winning photojournalist John Moore, became one of the iconic images used by the media to highlight coverage of the Trump's administration family separation immigration policy.

"Even if we get 100% Republican votes in the Senate, we need 10 Democrat votes to get a much needed Immigration Bill". Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. The other bill, the "compromise" or "moderate" bill, comes from Republican leadership.
