This picture taken on July 1, 2018 in Aulnay-sous-Bois, north of Paris shows a vehicle abandoned by French armed robber Redoine Faid at parking in a O'Parinor shopping mall after his escape onboard a helicopter from a prison in Reau.

The courtyard that they landed the helicopter in is the only one in Réau that doesn't have helicopter nets on it. Helicopter escapes from prisons in France were relatively common up until the late 2000s.

When the chopper arrived, Faid was meeting with his brother in the visiting room.

Officials later found the burnt and abandoned helicopter in Garges-les-Gonesse north of Paris.

It was the second time Faid has pulled off a spectacular jailbreak.

In his 2013 jailbreak, he briefly took four guards hostage with a pistol before escaping in a waiting getaway auto. He carried out that escape "with explosives hidden in tissue packs", according to The Associated Press, and was apprehended again just weeks later at a hotel. Investigators were questioning Faid's brother on Sunday afternoon.

The helicopter, the pilot of which was later released, was found burnt out north of Paris, as was a getaway auto.

Redoine Faid, France's notorious gangster dramatically flew away from a prison after his associates hitched him a ride in a hijacked helicopter.

Faid was freed by three heavily armed men with assault rifles around 11.20 am local time (2.50 pm Indian Standard Time), BBC reported.

Redoine Faid was serving 25 years for involvement in a failed robbery and murder of a police officer in a prison near Paris.

Faid has made several TV appearances and co- authored two books about his delinquent youth and rise as a criminal in the Paris suburbs.

Faid was later convicted of the murder of the policewoman along with two accomplices. Faid is believed to have left by auto along with his accomplices.

In the 1990s, Faid led a criminal gang involved in the armed robbery of banks and armoured vans transporting cash.

He spent years as an worldwide fugitive before his capture, and then a decade in prison, and then wrote an autobiography after his release on parole in 2009.

He penned a confessional book about his life of crime and embarked on an extensive media tour in 2010.
