Lewis Hamilton wins the French Grand Prix

Mercedes lost the lead in both the Formula 1 constructors' and drivers' championships with a shocking double retirement at the Austrian Grand Prix - the team's first double retirement for mechanical reasons since the Italian Grand Prix in 1955.

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff, however, struck a rather different tone after the race.

Hamilton took the lead from team-mate Valtteri Bottas off the line but was left vulnerable when his rivals all pitted during the early virtual safety vehicle period while he stayed out on track.

Hamilton, who is due to sign a new £40million-a-year extension with Mercedes, added: 'I am not going to lie we're going to have to work on all areas. "We just need to try to find a better set-up".

As it turned out, Hamilton was unable to reverse the mistake and would later retire from the race when his auto suffered a loss of fuel pressure.

According to Mercedes, the team left both of its drivers out in case Ferrari or Red Bull left a driver out on track who would act as a roadblock for race-leader Hamilton.

A major strategy error and tyre problems were to blame for Hamilton's withdrawal.

McLaren's other Finn Valtteri Bottas also retired after starting from pole and running second behind Hamilton until lap 15.

The German, whose team did not invoke orders for Raikkonen to cede position as might have been expected, clawed back the overall lead by a single point from Mercedes rival Hamilton.

"It was awesome, very hard to manage the tyres, lot of blistering, but we managed to hang on", said Verstappen. "The situation is very complex this year". We had a hydraulic leak that was linked to the steering on Valtteri and a drop in fuel pressure on Lewis' vehicle which was linked to the fuel system.

And, speaking at his prematch news conference, Bundestrainer Low said that he does not want to be involved in a nailbiting finish. This could be the most dramatic ending to a group at this World Cup . "Our World Cup begins today", the superstar said.

"I needed to catch up with the points, today was a very good day for me, and I hope we can continue like this". It's very rare and incredibly unusual for us to have these two DNFs in one weekend.

"We lost hydraulic pressure in turn three on that lap when it happened so I had no gear because of that", said Bottas.

Mercedes will pull out all the stops now to produce the "bullet-proof" reliability and strategy calls that their four-times world champion, a victor for the past four years at Silverstone, demands.

Shortly after being promoted above Hamilton, Ricciardo retired on lap 54 as he joined the ranks of attrition that also included Bottas and Renault's Nico Hulkenberg.

Vowles owned up to his error as Mercedes attempted to settle Hamilton.

"Lewis, this is James", he said over the radio. "We understand. It's my mistake".

"It's not from the outside sausage kerb, it's from the inside, I guess it was just vibrations or whatever".

Moments later, Hamilton was back on the radio again.

"I don't get it guys. I feel that means the difference I can make in the sport can be seen more, I can utilise it more". "Ultimately we were the quickest, we should have won, so we've got to keep working hard". As it was, Räikkönen held second with both Ferraris coming home behind race victor Max Verstappen.

Vowles subsequently twice spoke to Hamilton directly, apologising for the mistake and trying to motivate him, saying "Give us what you can", and later, "We trust in you and believe in you".
