It was a comfortable win for the big names in the singles category on Wednesday as defending champion Roger Federer and Serena Williams entered the third round of the Wimbledon 2018 event at the All England Club in London.

Eight-time victor Roger Federer, 36, plays German Jan-Lennard Struff last on Centre in round three.

The 36-year-old Federer compiled 48 winners and just 11 unforced errors.

Federer did not drop a point on his serve in the entire second set and kept that streak going until he was 30-0 up at 4-1 in the third, when Lacko sent a backhand victor down the line. "Maybe also the grass helps me just a little bit to get a few more free points than what it would on some other surfaces".

The 27-year-old second seed was also plagued by a barrage of flying ants during Wednesday's match on Court One, and needed insect repellent to get rid of them.

Gael Monfils overcame Paolo Lorenzi 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) to set up a third-round meeting with 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist Querrey. "I was really happy to perform such good tennis on Centre Court".

"What I know from knockout play throughout the course of my career is (that) you can't afford to come in lethargic", Federer explained.

The Dane fought back from 5-1 down in the final set and saved four match points, before eventually succumbing 6-4 1-6 7-5 to Russian world number 35 Ekaterina Makarova.

He will now face Austrian qualifier Dennis Novak, who surprised France's 16th seed Lucas Pouille 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 3-6, 6-2 today.

Eight-time Wimbledon victor Federer told BBC Sport: "I think I played very well".

The FIFA rankings state Switzerland are the sixth best football team in the world but Federer said his "lethargic" countrymen got what they deserved at the World Cup after they were beaten 1-0 by Sweden. Novak, ranked 171, converted six out of 11 break points en route to victory in almost three hours.

"I felt good, less nervous than in the first round", Federer said after the match.

Top-10 seeds Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens, Elina Svitolina, Caroline Garcia and Petra Kvitova have fallen through the trap door, but veteran Williams reached the last 32 with an impressive 6-1 6-4 victory over qualifier Viktoriya Tomova.

Milos Raonic slammed 34 aces as the 2016 Wimbledon finalist won 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) against Australia's John Millman. "I hope she's doing OK".

Fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro thumped Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-1 6-2 in 95 minutes to move into the third round.

The Swiss then opted to skip the clay-court season to prepare himself for this year's Wimbledon, where he has already progressed to the second round after brushing aside Serbian Dusan Lajovic, 6-1 6-3 6-4 in just 79 minutes.

However, Swan crashed out of the tournament losing 6-0, 6-3 to Mihaela Buzarnescu.
