Kim mentioned that Trump once labeled him 'a little Rocket Man' when US-North Korea ties hit their nadir previous year on the heels of Pyongyang's nuclear tests and missile launches.

For South Korean President Moon Jae-in, there is real reason to worry. A prominent advocate for U.S.

Trump spoke as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to North Korea for talks following Kim's pledge to Trump at a Singapore summit last month to denuclearise. That would in turn cause major problems for Moon Jae-in whose sky-high approval ratings can in part be attributed to his savvy handling of both Trump and Kim Jong Un.

Pompeo is set to reach Pyongyang on Friday for further talks on denuclearization of the country. "There is no military rationale for withdrawing the THAAD system as long as Pyongyang maintains an arsenal of ballistic missiles and as long as U.S. Forces remain in Korea".

U.S. intelligence estimates at that time gave the sub a submerged displacement of 2,000 tons and a beam of 36 feet, making it the largest ship built for the North Korean navy.

Officials believed North Korea was "positioning itself to extract every concession it can from the Trump administration - while clinging to nuclear weapons it believes are essential to survival", NBC News reported.

Late last month, 38 North, a USA -based North Korea watchdog, reported the North was making improvements at one of the country's nuclear research centres at a "rapid pace" despite Kim's pledge to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

This will be Pompeo's third trip to North Korea in three months. Pompeo has a letter from President Donald Trump, and according to South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, a copy of an Elton John CD with the song "Rocket Man", a reference to what Trump called Kim during a heated exchange of insults in 2017.

He said relations between the USA and North Korea have "dramatically shifted" in North Korea's favor over the past few months. The issues are deeply interlinked.

Much of the work took place in May-shortly after a meeting between North and South Korean leaders that supposedly ended with a mutual commitment to officially end the Korean War and eliminate nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula.

"Minister Kang will listen to the outcome of Secretary Pompeo's North Korea trip and hold in-depth discussions on ways to achieve the goals of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of permanent peace", the statement said.

For Moon, a return to 2017, when the North's nuclear and missile tests and Trump's bombastic tweets raised animosity on the Korean Peninsula to new heights, would be very hard to swallow.

North Koreans cheer as they watch a friendly basketball game between South and North players. One poll conducted in early May found that nine out of 10 South Koreans approved of the inter-Korean summit, while the president had an approval rating of 86 percent.

North Korea has said it will not comply with Tokyo's request for a resolution of the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by the North decades ago unless Tokyo lifts unilateral economic sanctions, sources close to bilateral ties said Thursday.
