US North Korea To Form Working Groups On Denuclearization

An unnamed spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry, in the statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency, said: "The US side came up only with its unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearisation, just calling for CVID, declaration and verification, all of which run counter to the spirit of the Singapore summit meeting and talks".

USA negotiators and their North Korean counterparts discussed the idea of Pyongyang making a full declaration of its weapons of mass destruction stockpiles and setting a timeline for giving them up, Pompeo said on Saturday.

Pompeo downplayed North Korea's statement after the talks in which the country's foreign ministry bashed hopes for a quick deal and accused the United States of making "gangster-like" demands aimed at forcing it to abandon nuclear weapons.

In practical terms, Pompeo said only that officials from both sides would meet on July 12 as a working group to discuss the repatriation of the remains of some USA soldiers killed during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

"Across the range of weapons and missiles, it's a broad definition of denuclearisation, and the North Koreans understand that and have not challenged that", he said.

North Korea expressed regret Saturday over the attitude of USA negotiators during their talks this week to work out details on how to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula as agreed to by their leaders in their recent summit meeting. "If it's not true, then we go back to the other way, but I don't think that's going to be necessary".

But, briefing reporters before flying on to Tokyo, he offered few new details as to how North Korea would honour its commitment to "denuclearise" in exchange for USA security guarantees. He later said there was progress in talks, including on setting a timeline for denuclearization, but also acknowledged much work remained to be done. Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, a top adviser to the country's leader and a former spy chief, exchanged pleasantries Saturday after having had a cordial and relaxed meeting Friday night, but the USA secretary of state didn't seem pleased with Kim's forwardness.

He noted, however, that "there are things that I have to clarify", Reuters reported.

North Korea apparently didn't get the memo. We're in a fight with China.

"We would like to thank you for your support with respect to our efforts in North Korea", Pompeo told Pham.

On his flight to Pyongyang, Pompeo said both sides made commitments at the Singapore summit on the complete denuclearization of North Korea and on what a transformed relationship between their two countries might look like.

He reiterated President Donald Trump's pledge to boost North Korea's economy and provide it with security assurances in exchange for Kim giving up nuclear weapons.

The North statement contradicted the version of events given by Pompeo just hours before.

As Pompeo left the North Korean capital Saturday, he told reporters that the trip had been "productive" and that progress had been made on a number of issues.

The US-North Korea talks are being closely watched across Asia.

Mr Pompeo said Vietnam's experience since the normalisation of relations with the USA in 1995 should be proof for North Korea that prosperity and partnership with the U.S. is possible after decades of conflict and mistrust.

US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said Pompeo did not meet Kim Jong-un during his visit, but he handed over a letter to the North Korean leader from Trump.

But, Bennett said, that doesn't mean it's a bad idea to talk to them - as long as the administration makes consequences clear and holds North Korean leadership's feet to the fire. He is due to meet officials from allies South Korea and Japan in Tokyo also on Sunday.

Pompeo responded in kind, "There are things that I have to clarify as well".
