Fred Waller, patrol chief of the Chicago police, told the New York Times and other media, that officers saw a bulge in his pants that they believed to be a gun.

Protesters in Chicago are demanding answers after the fatal shooting of a man by police prompted violent confrontations in the IL city. No officers were injured during the shooting.

A string of police killings of black men, some unarmed, has caused outrage and led to protests in cities across the US.

"The whole damn system is guilty as hell", dozens chanted on Saturday just hours after police shot and killed the man in the South Shore neighbourhood of Chicago.

At some point during the confrontation, the unidentified man was shot, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital, according to officials.

The police recovered a semiautomatic-type weapon and magazines from the suspect.

The protests began soon after the shooting. The police have claimed that the violence was in response to protestors throwing bottles and rocks, although as of yet there is no video footage to back this up. "Who do you serve?" they shouted at officers as the protest continued into the night.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that when officers on foot tried to question the man Saturday evening a confrontation ensued and he was shot.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the video, according to Fox 32 Chicago. Police update after police shootingThe incident occurred near 71st Street and Clyde on the South Side, where crowds gathered afterward and, at times, scuffled with police.
