Two Palestinian youth were shot dead and several others injured by Israeli forces during the protests along the Gaza Strip near the fence with Israel on Friday. The Gaza Health Ministry said the two, 15 and 16, died when the building they were standing near was hit. He gave their ages as 35 and 13. The Israelis retaliated with live fire, killing a Palestinian teen and injuring 220 others throughout the day, Wafa reported. "They were crowned by the success of the Egyptian effort to restore calm and end the escalation".

A senior Israeli defence official said: 'Only the facts on the ground will dictate our further response'.

Netanyahu has faced public pressure to take action against the launching of incendiary kites and balloons from Gaza that have burned crops and scrubland in southern Israel. About 10 of the launches were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome aerial defense system, the Israeli military said.

Israel says Hamas, the Islamist group that rules Gaza, has been orchestrating the protests to distract from their governance problems and provide cover for militants' cross-border attacks.

"We will not accept any acts of terror against us", Steinitz said, stressing that additional attacks on southern Israel would be dealt with harshly.

"We are not in a (military) operation".

Still, it was unclear whether the truce would hold as warning sirens were heard in southern Israel early Sunday, indicating incoming fire, AP said.

The Israeli military lifted its restrictions along the Gaza border Sunday, indicating it had accepted an Egypt-mediated cease-fire that ended a 24-hour round of fighting with Hamas militants that had threatened to devolve into all-out war.

Unconfirmed Palestinian reports said at least two people had been killed in the strikes. Fourteen others were wounded.

The rare strike in the heart of Gaza City blew out windows at a nearby mosque, an art gallery, government offices, a tech start-up company and dozens of houses, leaving light fixtures and wiring dangling.

In a statement, the military said Hamas' activities "violate Israeli sovereignty, endanger Israeli civilians and sabotage Israel's humanitarian efforts that aim to help Gazan civilians".

"Our policy is clear: Whoever hurts us, we will hit them with great strength", Mr. Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting Sunday.

Three Israelis were reportedly injured when one of the rockets landed on a residential home. A police spokesman said no hits had been recorded in the city.

Hamas on Saturday said the barrage of rockets and mortar shells into Israeli territory overnight was sacked by the "resistance" to "stop Israeli escalation". "Bombardment for bombardment", he said.

An Israeli soldier was also moderately wounded when a grenade was thrown at him from the northern Gaza Strip, the military said.

Hours later, Israel launched air strikes in Gaza.
