April Tinsley cold case: DNA leads to arrest 30 years after murder

IN authorities say DNA led them to a man they arrested and charged in connection with the 1988 assault and death of an eight-year-old girl.

The Fort Wayne Police Department and Indiana State Police on Sunday arrested 59-year-old John D. Miller, of Grabill, for the 1988 homicide of 8-year-old April Tinsley.

An Allen County judge is giving prosecutors until Thursday to formally charge Miller.

Investigators collected three used condoms from his trash on July 6 and found the DNA was a match to evidence recovered from the 1988 crime scene.

Court papers say Miller confessed that he strangled Tinsley so she wouldn't tell anyone he had molested her. Police said Miller was responsible for several incidents in which he wrote notes claiming to be the killer throughout the past three decades.

Two years after the murder, police found a note on a barn close to where her body was found in DeKalb County. It is thought that formal charges will be brought against Miller this week.

In 1988, an 8-year-old girl, was raped and murdered after being abducted from her neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

"Hi Honey I been watching you I am the same person that kinapped [sic] an rape an kill Aproil Tinsely [sic] you are my next victim", one note, sent in 2004 along with a used condom, read.

According to the affidavit, police approached Miller after a DNA technology company that was working with Fort Wayne Police narrowed a suspect to two brothers: Miller and another man.

According to the affidavit, Miller not only admitted of abducting and murdering the girl, he further gave grave details about Tinsley death.

Fourteen years after that, four taunting notes were found at various Fort Wayne residences, including several on bicycles that young girls left in their yards, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

On the following Monday, a jogger on a rural country road about 20 miles outside of the city made a gruesome discovery: Aprils body at the bottom of a ditch. "D$3 id you find the other shoe haha I will kill again".

"Hi Honey I been watching you I am the same person that kinapped an rape an kill Aproil Tinsley you are my next vitem [sic]", read one note, posted online by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Sunday, Miller was called in for questioning and when asked if he knew why the police wanted to talk to him - he replied "April Tinsley".

At the time, forensic investigators found DNA of an unknown male in Tinsley's underwear, but were unable to come up with a match.

Taking a clue from recent cases, the Fort Wayne Police Department submitted the DNA for analysis against public genealogy databases and were able to zone in on Miller, who lived in a trailer park just outside Fort Wayne.

As investigators struggled to solve her murder over the years, they were taunted by messages left by the alleged killer.

Tinsley cried as Miller - charged with murder in the abduction and killing of 8-year-old April Tinsley in 1988 - took his seat on the left side of the courtroom.

Police have also positively identified his DNA after sifting through his rubbish outside his house.
