Duck Boat Survivor Cries Over 9 Relatives’ Drowning & Reveals Captain Said They Didn’t Need Life Vests

The 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank in a Missouri lake were remembered Sunday during a service attended by about 200 people in the tourism community of Branson.

The attorney general said investigators from the Missouri State Highway Patrol will also look at the boat's canopy and how hard it was for the passengers and crew to get off during the chaotic event.

Most oversight for the vessels is provided by the Coast Guard, but Hall said the Coast Guard isn't staffed properly to provide the type of strict oversight the boats require.

Former NTSB chairman Jim Hall says duck boats should be banned.

The US Coast Guard said on Sunday it will oversee the salvage operations for the amphibious vessel that was carrying 31 people when it went down on Thursday in a fierce and sudden storm on Table Rock Lake outside of the tourist destination of Branson.

Victims of the tragedy include her sister-in-law, nephew, mother-in-law, father-in-law, her husband, his uncle, and her three children.

Coleman wept at times as she described trying to help her family and save herself.

Her son Todd said on Thursday his daughter, who is recovering in hospital, said she could feel Leslie pushing her up as the boat filled with water.

During an emotional press conference on Saturday, Coleman said that when they boarded the boat the captain told them they would not need life jackets.

A witness' video of the duck boat just before it capsized suggests that its flexible plastic windows might have been closed and could have trapped passengers as the hybrid boat-truck went down. The NTSB has recommended passengers not wear life jackets on boats that have canopies because when the vehicles sink, the life jackets can float passengers into the canopy, preventing escape.

The captain mentioned the life jackets before they went on the lake but said, "you won't need them so we didn't grab them", Coleman said Saturday.

In this case, investigators say it is up to the captain on board, whether the crew should wear them or not.

Fellow survivor, Talyssa Mann, a 19-year-old from Carlsbad, New Mexico, said Coleman's statement about life jackets was correct.

Nine of the victims were the Colemans. They were the only family aboard in which no one died.

More than three dozen people have died in incidents involving duck boat vehicles in the United States over the past two decades, both on water and land. Others killed came from Missouri, Arkansas and IL.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash; the agency's probe could take up to a year to complete. The NTSB's report on that accident found that roofs or canopies on duck boats greatly endanger passengers in the event of a sinking.

A suicide bomber carried out an attack near the Kabul airport Sunday, killing 14 people and narrowly missing Afghanistan's vice president, who was returning home after living in Turkey for over a year, security officials said.

On Thursday, the area around Branson was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning shortly after 6:30 p.m. local, about half an hour before the boat sank.

Stoermer thanked the cooperation of the Missouri Highway Patrol, Stone County sheriff's office, the city of Branson and the Showboat Branson Belle in aiding in the salvaging of the boat.

During the retrieval efforts, which began around 9 a.m., divers connected the Ride the Ducks boat to a crane that dragged the vessel from its resting place 80-feet deep in Table Rock Lake.
