The White House on Monday said it was considering taking away the security clearances for six former intelligence and law-enforcement officials, including the Obama-era director of the Central Intelligence Agency, John Brennan, and the onetime head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation fired by President Donald Trump, James Comey.

Former FBI Director James Comey has been a fierce critic of US President Donald Trump and his administration.

"Public officials should not use their security clearances to leverage speaking fees or network talking head fees", he added.

Hayden, after being nominated by President George W. Bush, served as CIA Director from 2006 to 2009, and McCabe served as Deputy FBI Director from 2016 to 2018.

"You would think the White House would check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation before trying to throw shiny objects to the press corps...", she wrote on Twitter.

Hayden also brushed it off, writing on Twitter: "I dont [sic] go back for classified briefings". Rand Paul's (R-KY) evidence-free assertion earlier in the day that Brennan could be spilling state secrets to media outlets in order to profit off of his access. At least McCabe, according to his spokesperson, and possibly more of the officials already had had their clearances deactivated after being fired by Trump.

"The president doesn't like the fact that people are politicizing agencies and departments that are specifically meant to not be political", she said. It was nothing short of treasonous. He said all of the former officials have been speaking "out of genuine concerns about President Trump".

Last Wednesday, Paul eviscerated Brennan for describing President Trump's performance at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland as "treasonous". "Politicizing matters of national security by going after his political enemies?" I restated to him what I have said in public: John Brennan and others partisans should have their security clearances revoked ... Mazie Hirono, Hawaii Democrat.

Asked if Trump was punishing the former officials due to their criticism, Sanders said, "No, I think you are creating your own story there".

He added of Mr. Brennan, "It's also not customary for the former Central Intelligence Agency director to be off the reservation where he is, either".
