Mars making closest approach to Earth in 15 years

NASA’s Chief Scientist Reveals The Truth About Life On Mars

"The Red Planet will be at its brightest since 2003, when Mars made its closest approach to Earth in nearly 60,000 years since September, 24, 57617 BC", Dr Debiprosad Duari, director, Research & Academic, MP Birla Institute of Fundamental Research had said earlier this month.

Astronomers say the distance between Mars and Earth will be 57.6 million kilometers.

The local stargazers are invited for a camp to witness the Red Planet from 7 pm to 10 pm tonight at the Colombo Campus grounds.

"The Red Planet and Earth haven't been this close since 2003, and won't be again until 2035", NASA said.

"Carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O) are the only greenhouse gases that are likely to be present on Mars in sufficient abundance to provide any significant greenhouse warming", said Bruce Jakosky of the University of Colorado, Boulder, lead author of the study appearing in Nature Astronomy July 30.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has photographed Saturn and Mars near their closest approaches to Earth in June and July 2018. The picture was taken from a distance of 36.9 million miles (59,39 million km). This proximity gives the Red Planet its brightest appearance in the night sky since the 2003 opposition. Hubble was used to observe the planet on June 6, 2018, when Saturn was only approximately 1.36 billion miles from Earth, almost as close to us as it ever gets.

Briton rider eliminated from Tour de France
The Tour continues Thursday with stage 12 to Alpe d'Huez, live on NBCSN and NBC Sports Gold ( full broadcast schedule here ). Froome won the season's first grand tour ahead of Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), who now sits third overall at 1:44 in the Tour.

Those who desire the terraforming of Mars suggest that a mixture of carbon dioxide and water vapor would from the greenhouse gases needed in order to heat the Red Planet. At this point, the ringed planet was 1.4 billion kilometers (870 million miles) away from Earth and its spectacular rings are almost at maximum tilt toward the planet, offering a breathtaking angle of Saturn to photograph.

"In fact, we now believe that early Mars was a lot like Earth".

Visually, Mars will be perceived as bright and large object. It has a very helpful atmosphere, which, being primarily Carbon dioxide with some nitrogen and argon and a few other trace elements, means that we can grow plants on Mars just by compressing the atmosphere.

To observe this planet will become possible with the naked eye.

Astronomical event was broadcast by NASA from the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.
