Community Shield: Sarri's Chelsea value to beat ill-prepared City

Two goals from Sergio Aguero - his 200th and 201st for the club - proved decisive as Manchester City easily saw off FA Cup winners Chelsea 2-0 to win the Community Shield at Wembley.

Billed as the pivot who would provide the foundation for Maurizio Sarri's attacking gameplan, Italy midfielder Jorginho was completely out of sorts in his introduction to English football.

Some of their lethargy going forward could be put down to the heat, which made it hard for both sides to sustain any sort of tempo. Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Benjamin Mendy started for City, for whom Bernardo Silva was bright.

But they produced a controlled and efficient performance to secure their third piece of silverware in the past six months. Every time the Premier League champions got the ball, they looked like scoring.

"I am ready, I am ready", said Guardiola of City's title defence.

Crackdown Feared in Venezuela After Alleged Assassination Attempt on Maduro
Maduro can take some solace in that a half-dozen bodyguards dashed on stage to cover him with bulletproof panels. Joggers and cyclists were taking up two of the lanes that are traditionally used for weekend recreation.

But ominously for Liverpool, Tottenham, and Manchester United - all hoping to dethrone City - Guardiola revealed his players are still well short of full fitness after only a handful of training sessions following the World Cup. That is to be expected, given the fact they have the advantage of two more years' practice honing their style than this Chelsea team.

Sarri replaced Antonio Conte as Chelsea boss early in pre-season and he is looking forward to working with 27-year-old Hazard, who will not feature in Sunday's Community Shield against Manchester City at Wembley after being granted an extended post-Russia 2018 break. The likes of Daniele Rugani (h/t Mirror) and Wilfried Zaha (h/t Daily Mail) have been linked with the club in recent weeks and it will be interesting to see which player the Blues end up signing.

Two-goal Aguero was replaced by Vincent Kompany, with the Belgium defender untroubled as City strolled to the most comfortable of Wembley victories, Jesus denied their third goal by Caballero's save but Moses nearly pulling one back after a scramble late on. Guardiola's plan to put consistent pressure on the 26-year-old seemed to work, as the Blues seemed to miss the services of World Cup victor, N'Golo Kante.

Danny Drinkwater - 5 - Didn't make much of impact on the game. It should've been 2-0 within five minutes of the restart as Aguero got in behind only to see his attempt to around Caballero thwarted by his global team-mate. I want only players with a high level of motivations. We were told to expect 'Sarri-ball, ' that Chelsea's new Italian coach would bring a brand of exciting, dynamic football to the Premier League. Pedro almost pulled one back for Chelsea but his curled effort rolled just wide before David Luiz was inches away from netting an own goal. Having reached the semi-finals and having met each-other in a pointless third-place playoff, City's numerous Belgian and English stars have only this week returned to their domestic fold and none of them made it to the States for City's three International Champions Cup games with Dortmund, Liverpool and Bayern. I do not know (if we are close).
