'Take this one seriously': Hurricane Lane, packing 150 mph winds, is barrelling towards Hawaii

Rainfall up to 20 inches could fall in some areas leading to major flash flooding and landslides.

A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area, and is issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds.

Jodi Nishida and Sam Delovio of Kaimuki bought plyboard Tuesday at City Mill on Waialae Avenue in preparation for Hurricane Lane.

Gov. David Ige and the county mayors signed emergency proclamations Tuesday allowing government officials to respond with greater speed.

SURF: Large swells generated by Lane will impact the Hawaiian Islands, beginning tonight on the Big Island, spreading across the remainder of the island chain on Wednesday.

It isn't often that the islands are threatened by tropical systems, although the last storm of note was Madeline in 2016 which also caused hurricane watches and warnings to be issued for some islands. CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB-TV describes Hurricane Lane as a "massive and rare Category 5 Central Pacific cyclone".

But Hurricane Lane looks poised to affect the Aloha State, and was about 480 miles southeast of Honolulu early Wednesday with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, just above the Category 5 threshold.

While Lane's strength is expected to weaken slightly upon its approach to the Hawaiian islands, it was still expected to remain a unsafe hurricane.

Another hurricane is threatening to impact Hawaii this week, as risky Category 4 Hurricane Lane approaches the Central Pacific island chain just two weeks after Hurricane Hector passed the islands.

Thanks to Trump, Turkey and Europe get closer
Referring to imprisoned pastor Andrew Brunson , Trump said "they have a great Christian pastor there, he's a very innocent man". Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish president, said last Saturday: "I call out to those in the United States".

But it could still generate 75- to 110-mph wind, 10 to 16 inches of rain, 10- to 15-foot surf and four feet of storm surge.

According to the latest forecast track, Lane is slated to remain a risky hurricane when its center moves very close or over parts of the state Thursday through Saturday.

Residents "rushed to stores to stock up on bottled water, ramen, toilet paper and other supplies" as the storm neared, The Associated Press reports.

Residents and businesses were also urged to update emergency plans.

Longtime Hawaii residents recalled a devastating 1992 hurricane as they prepared for Hurricane Lane.

"People are getting ready, which is exactly what we want", Maui County spokesman Rod Antone said.

The above map shows the tracks of storms that have reached Category 4 or 5 at some point in their lifespan, since 1950 - not including Hurricane Lane. All pavilion and camping permits for these parks have been cancelled.

The long and short of it: It's still too soon to know the impacts, if any, the storm will have on any of the islands.
