Dozens of Sears, Kmart stores closing nationwide

Sears Holding Company announced plans Thursday to close another 46 stores across the U.S. The list includes the Kmart at Scott Depot in Putnam County.

The struggling retailer said it notified employees at 13 Kmarts and 33 Sears stores their locations will close by November. The company operated 894 Sears and Kmart stores as of May 5 before the latest closure rounds were announced, according to a filing. Another 100 stores were added to the list in May. Liquidation sales will kick off as early as next week.

About half the Visalia Sears store at Mooney Boulevard and Caldwell Avenue, 35,050 square feet, is also available for lease, according to an online listing.

The Sears store has been an anchor at Vancouver Mall since the mall opened in August 1977.

Sears is continuing to evaluate its network of stores and "will make further adjustments as needed", their statement reads. The company is now headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The mall apocalypse, called the "retail apocalypse" in some places, has been surging at a faster rate on an annual basis since 2014. Sears shares have fallen more than 85 percent over the past 12 months and hit an all-time intraday low of $1.15 earlier this week.
