Although the Raiders set a high price, the Bears were able to match it in exchange for two first-round picks.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware (32) carries the ball against Oakland Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack (52) in the second half at Arrowhead Stadium. And he is apparently looking to top the market-busting, six-year, $135 million contract that defensive tackle Aaron Donald just signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

But the reality of starting the regular season minus Mack hammered home with general manager Reggie McKenzie, as the hours to the league deadline of establishing the initial 53-man roster crept closer.

Assuming he's stayed in shape during his contract holdout, Mack will get his first look at Rodgers as a division rival on September 9. They have handed out a series of significant contracts to players, including a five-year, $125 million deal to quarterback Derek Carr. Green Bay. In addition to the benefits for Floyd, the same rings true for the defensive linemen, including Akiem Hicks who played at a near-Pro Bowl level last year and should have a great shot at making this year's team.

ESPN first reported the trade. Mack, who turned 27 in February, is in the prime of his career with 40.5 sacks over four seasons in Oakland.

The Bears were well-positioned to land Mack due to their salary cap situation surrounding Trubisky's rookie contract and flexibility elsewhere on the roster. It also sends a powerful message on behalf of Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace to the Bears locker room: they're ready to win now. Bears trade for Khalil Mack, when it gets done, will top that, making it the most an National Football League team has surrendered for a defensive player.

Like the Vikings did with Allen, the Bears are getting Mack at the height of his powers.

78 tackles, 10½ sacks, three passes defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery. I'm confident the compensation to Oakland, including the return draft picks to us, and the contract extension for Khalil are fair to all parties.

This is one hell of a bold move.

The Bears re-signed defensive coordinator Vic Fangio after passing on him for the head coaching job and drafted linebacker Roquan Smith with the No 8 overall pick.
