White House's Late Release of Documents Gets Kavanaugh Hearing Off to Crazy Start

Sens. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) and Cory Booker (D., N.J.) used their performances during the early hours of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing to fundraise for their political campaigns. Republican Senator John Cornyn likened the interruptions to "mob rule".

"I'd like to be recognized", she declared. The administration held back more than 100,000 pages of documents related to his service because the White House and the Department of Justice have determined they are protected by constitutional privilege, according to a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"You had a chance and you lost", Graham said to Democrats.

"We can not possibly move forward, Mr. Chairman, with this hearing", she declared.

"Not how I was raised", quipped Sen.

More than 20 witnesses are being called for the coming days of hearings. Richard Blumenthal of CT, "selecting a justice on the Supreme Court who potentially will cast a decisive vote in his own case". But Democrats say thousands were dumped out in public just hours before the hearing begins, making it impossible for thorough scrutiny.

President Donald Trump, who nominated Kavanaugh on July 9, weighed in on the ruckus on the committee as Kavanaugh read his opening statement, before the meeting wrapped up for the day. He shared a video clip of the moment, saying it showed that "as the Judge was leaving and had already turned away and begun walking, security intervened and ushered the Judge away".

Soon, photographers were arrayed immediately in front of the back-of-the-room chairs where these protesters were deploying themselves.

Female protesters dressed as handmaids from Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale lined the corridors outside the hearings, a costume choice they said alluded to Kavanaugh's "anti-abortion, anti-healthcare and anti-women" views. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the committee. And on Tuesday, it was nice to see the Senate Democrats agree on this point as well.

Illusory to think Syrian refugees can return now, France says
Idlib is one of the four areas under rebel control which were designated as de-escalation zones past year . It's now more focused on removing the Iranian forces that played a key part in Assad's victory.

Afterward, Guttenberg tweeted that Kavanaugh "did not want to deal with the reality of gun violence".

Kavanaugh said he has been a "pro-law judge" who does not seek a pre-ordained outcome, and who would bring his impartiality to the nation's high court.

Asked about court precedents, the importance of previously settled cases including the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that ensures access to abortion, Kavanaugh said, "Respect for precedent is important".

In Garza, the central question was whether a pregnant teenager caught illegally crossing the border into the United States had a right to an abortion here. Garland is the chief judge of the appeals court on which Kavanaugh has served.

"The government has inexplicably and wrongheadedly failed to take a position on that antecedent question", Henderson continued.

"I think we ought to have this loudmouth removed", Hatch said. "To conclude otherwise rewards lawlessness and erases the fundamental difference between citizenship and illegal presence in our country".

Kavanaugh will also likely face tough questioning on environmental controls, affirmative action and the conflict between religious beliefs and gay rights.

Kavanaugh stands to inherit Justice Anthony Kennedy's seat on the court, and there is no seat more important.

The best for which we can hope is that such nominees manage to eke their way through the gladiatorial process that decades of game-playing has produced - a process that, like the opening of the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing, is full of sound and fury signifying nothing. "And he was a champion of liberty", Kavanaugh will say, per the excerpts.
