Tiger Woods returns to Ryder Cup as wild card

Bryson De Chambeau said he was nervous playing with his childhood idol Tiger Woods in a competitive situation

Bryson De Chambeau said he was nervous playing with his childhood idol Tiger Woods in a competitive situation

Woods, a 14-time major champion, and DeChambeau, coming off this third career PGA title at last week's Northern Trust event, are each expected to receive "wildcard" picks from United States captain Jim Furyk on Tuesday.

Former world number one Woods had already been assured of a trip to Paris for the September 28-30 showdown with Europe after being named as one of Furyk's non-playing vice-captains.

Has European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn made the same mistake by selecting Sergio Garcia as a wild card pick that Darren Clarke made with Lee Westwood two years ago at Hazeltine?

Golf's latest search for a breakout star has come to the quirky little laboratory of Bryson DeChambeau. Furyk will announce his final captain's pick after this week's BMW Championship.

"This is mostly likely my last chance to go over to Europe and to be a part of a winning USA team in Europe". His last time overseas was at Gleneagles, where he infamously closed out a losing press conference by questioning captain Tom Watson and the direction the PGA of America was taking the US team. His form has been solid this year with top-six finishes at both the Masters and US Open in 2018.

As I noted earlier in the week, Wallace shares similar attributes to Poulter, who brings a unique spark to the European team room.

The more matches he wins, the more it will boost his confidence and allow him to hit a little reset button after this poor start to the season.

DeChambeau earned a spot on the team thanks to three wins this year (Memorial Tournament, The Northern Trust and Dell Technologies Championship). I got off to a great start this year.

DeChambeau closed with a 4-under 67 for a two-shot victory on the TPC Boston, becoming only the second player in the 12 years of the lucrative FedEx Cup to win the opening two playoff events.

In 2008, Singh finished first in the Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship and went on to win the FedExCup and its $10 million prize.

Following this week's PGA event, the BMW Championship, Furyk will name the 12th and final member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team. For the continent to wrestle back the trophy these wildcards will be under pressure to repay the faith shown by their captain. So hopefully if I do make it this year that all things considered I'd be more comfortable when I got there.

"He's won three times so far under the age of 25, which is pretty impressive", Woods said on Sunday after being paired with DeChambeau.

Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bubba Watson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson and Rickie Fowler automatically qualified for the team. "And lo and behold, I'm a part of this team". "We've got three weeks to go and I want it to be next week".
