Trump calls Woodward book a 'scam'

President Donald J. Trump delivers remarks from the White House

Vice President Mike Pence was an early suspect to be the writer of a bombshell New York Times op-ed from an anonymous senior administration official denouncing the president as incompetent and amoral, but he quickly worked to quash this speculation.

The Times acknowledged the "rare step" of publishing an anonymous editorial but said the official's job would be jeopardized if they were identified. "[Donald Trump] has a clear governing vision for the country and his record of results is remarkable".

A senior official in the White House has written an "extraordinary" essay claiming staff are actively trying to thwart Donald Trump.

The column has set off a wild guessing game on the author's identity. "Our office is above such amateur acts", wrote Jarrod Agen, spokesman for Mike Pence.

But when one of Trump's own appointees (finally) says it, perhaps there's a different weight to the words. He said in tweets that the newspaper must turn over the writer to the government "for National Security purposes" and asked, "TREASON?"

"Although he was elected as a Republican, the president shows little affinity for ideals long espoused by conservatives: free minds, free markets and free people", the op-ed reads.

Donald Trump Rips The NFL & Nike After Kaepernick Endorsement (TWEET)
Nike and Colin Kaepernick broke the Internet this week with an ad campaign celebrating the 30th anniversary of " Just Do It ". The ad depicts young athletes striving towards their goals and dreams even if the results seem "crazy".

While he does not name his sources, Woodward said he spoke with many people now or formerly working for Trump as he researched the book, discussing not just the President Trump's personality but also major policy debates regarding North Korea and Afghanistan.

All of this has led to what appears to be a frenzied search by the White House to determine the mystery writer, with Trump's advisers reportedly weighing administering lie detector tests to figure out who among them was the author - an idea raised publicly Thursday by Sen.

He invoked the term "deep state" - used to portray people with a political agenda working against him - as well as his campaign promise to drain what he has called the corrupt Washington swamp.

James Dao, who runs the Times op-ed page, told CNN he received the article through an intermediary several days ago, calling the timing of piece's publication and the Woodward book "a coincidence". "And I ought to tell you, just I find - I find the media's efforts in this regard to undermine this administration incredibly disturbing", Pompeo said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement saying that "this coward should do the right thing and resign".

The official described a "resistance" inside the administration and said aides were working to thwart the president's decisions when they deemed them misguided or potentially harmful to the nation.
