It will help India obtain critical and encrypted defence technologies for Indian defence platforms from the US.

Pompeo and Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met separately Thursday before joining top defense officials for talks.

Last night, while EAM Sushma Swaraj received the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the airport on his first visit to India, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman went to receive her American counterpart James Mattis.

"India's leadership in the world supports our shared democratic values regionally and globally".

The U.S. and India haven't always been this close. Washington and New Delhi share concerns over Pakistan-based anti-Western and anti-Indian Islamist militant groups.

After the conclusion of the talks, the two sides signed crucial defence pacts and agreed to work together to combat terrorism. New Delhi has been seeking the drones to monitor the Indian Ocean where China, a close ally of Pakistan, has been making repeated forays in recent years.

However, a new defence bill proposes giving the USA president authority to grant waivers when national security interests are at stake. Our effort here, too, is not to penalise great strategic partners like India, a major defence partner.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that talks were ongoing on whether to grant waivers for India from USA sanctions on Russian Federation and Iran as he made it clear that Washington's intention is not to "penalise great strategic partners like India".

In an apparent reference to China and its Belt and Road initiative which floods developing countries with cash for infrastructure projects that sometimes can not be repaid Pompeo said the U.S. and India wish to pursue "fundamental rights and liberties and prevent external economic coercion".

Both sides were committed to the full implementation of the civil nuclear energy partnership and collaboration between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Westinghouse Electric Company for the establishment of six nuclear power plants in India, the statement said.

Felter said that by signing the agreement some Indian weapon systems would see an immediate increase in capabilities, including the C-130 and C-17 aircraft.

Iran is India's third-largest oil supplier behind Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The US is reportedly unhappy with India's plans to buy the S-400 long-range, surface-to-air missile system from Russian Federation.

"The ministers denounced any use of terrorist proxies in the region, and in this context, they called on Pakistan to ensure that the territory under its control is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries", it said. Both moves would violate USA sanctions.

Analysts say the deal could result in the U.S. transfer high-tech equipment such as the Sea Guardian armed surveillance drones to India. Later, Pompeo told reporters the United States was not seeking to punish India for its proposed purchase.

The Trump White House has said that it seeks to bring Iran's oil sales supposedly down to "zero". India signed the GSOMIA in 2002.

The United States and India began talks in New Delhi to deepen political and security ties on Thursday, with officials hoping for an accord on military communications that could lead to increased USA arms sales to the South Asian giant.

India, however, is highly reliant on Iranian crude imports.
