Spanish tennis participant Rafael Nadal superior to the semifinals of the U.S. Open, 5 events beating the consultant of Austria, Dominic Thiem with a rating of zero:6, 6:four, 7:5, 6:7 (four:7), 7:6 (7:5).

The victory, which puts the defending champion through to his third consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, came hours after Williams booked her 12th U.S. Open semifinal and the night after Roger Federer was ousted by the unseeded Australian John Millman in the fourth round.

But the 17-time grand slam champion battled back to win the second and third sets before Thiem came out on top of an 81-minute fourth set to take the match into a nerve-wracking decider.

Rafael Nadal, of Spain, sits during a changeover in his match against Dominic Thiem, of Austria, during the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament early Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, in NY.

It was the first time the Spaniard had failed to win a game in a set since Miami in 2017 against Philipp Kohlschreiber, a match Nadal went on to win.

Twenty-four hours after Roger Federer fell to John Millman, his old rival avoided following him out of the tournament, but only just, completing a 0-6 6-4 7-5 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (7/5) victory at 2.03am USA time.

Nadal was clearly rattled and lost the first three points of the tiebreak that Thiem won 7-4 to force a fourth set.

Leading 6-5 with a chance to take match point, Nadal mishit what looked like an easy volley into the net. And I played against a great opponent.

"It was a very tough start", Nadal said.

Imports from the United States reached US$13.3 billion, a two per cent increase from the previous year. China has threatened retaliation , which could include action against U.S. companies operating there.

"I just wish him all the very very best". It's cruel sometimes tennis, because I think this match didn't really deserve a loser. "But in a few days I will look back and will remember how great it was to play in front of a packed Arthur Ashe this great match".

"He's young, he has plenty of time to win big tournaments", he said on court. It was a question of a little bit of luck at the end. "I mean, he's a great guy".

"When Thiem has beaten Rafa, he's taken the serve early", Rusedski said on Amazon's Prime coverage when giving his thoughts before the match.

But as he showed against Thiem, no one is better with his back against the wall than Nadal.

Nadal, who was on court for four hours and 48 minutes in a tie which finished at 2.04am local time in NY (7.04am BST), commented on the humidity of the playing conditions that has troubled so many players in this year's Open, and broke down his performance.

Nadal was once again able to recover after going down a break, forcing the set to a tie-breaker.

He'll face 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro next. Del Potro beat John Isner in a match that played out as most people expected.

At this point, Thiem had to ask for a new pair of shoes and socks because his were waterlogged from sweating so much. But Nadal, after letting the 25-second serve clock expire, rallied to win the point and hold for a 5-4 lead.
