Britain's Alison Hughes, the second woman to umpire a U.S. Open men's singles final, kept a low profile as the two former champions went to work.

Djokovic defeated Del Potro at the US Open to win his 14th title, putting him level with Pete Sampras, three behind Rafael Nadal and six adrift of Federer.

Del Potro was back in a grand slam final for the first time since defeating Federer to win at Flushing Meadows nine years ago.

Asked if he had a greater appreciation for winning slams after a hectic few years, Djokovic said on ESPN: "I do".

He overcame a 95-minute set, the longest of the tournament, to beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Never was that more apparent than the game that stood out on this evening, with Djokovic serving while down 4-3 in the second set.

He had three more chances in the eighth, all saved by Djokovic in a marathon 20-minute game which left Hollywood superstar Meryl Streep clasping her head in astonishment.

All that frustration was washed away when he struck the overhead victor to clinch victory over Del Potro, Djokovic falling to his back, arms and legs spread savouring the moment.

Some two hours after the match, del Potro walked out to the players garden to a greeting from his group of about a dozen friends who have led the cheers from his box, supporters from back home he has credited with keeping his spirits up during the depressing days when he was injured.

"I'm very sad for being a loser today but Novak deserved to take the trophy", said Del Potro, who wept into his hands before being comforted by Djokovic. He showed off all of his court-covering, foe-frustrating, defense-to-offense skills down the stretch on the way to his third U.S. Open title, claiming the last 16 sets he played. He has now won Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year on three occasions (2011, 2015 and 2018).

Novak Djokovic won the U.S. Open on Sunday, his 14th Grand Slam championship.

The second set tie-break proved to be the turning point as the Serbian took it and from that point on, his victory on Arthur Ashe Stadium looked inevitable.

"I feel like these guys, rivalries with these guys, matches with Federer and Nadal, have made me the player I am, have shaped me into the player I am".

"I was playing at my limit nearly all the time, looking for winners", he said.

"I had to kind of disconnect a little bit", said Djokovic. Three times, Djokovic steeled himself.

"I believe he'll be here again with the champion's trophy".

Since his June trek with his wife up Mont Sainte-Victoire, the mountain that famously also served as an inspiration for Paul Cezanne, the 31-year-old has added a pair of Grand Slam titles to his resume.

He won two in one year.

This was not that day, although even at his absolute best he would have struggled to hold off Djokovic on this form.
