Former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort pleaded guilty Friday to two federal crimes as part of a plea deal in which he agreed to cooperate with the special counsel's Russian Federation probe.

As that turned out to be part of a newly-minted cooperation agreement with Robert Mueller, the special counsel, we may soon know whether Mr Trump and Ms Sanders are right. Convicted last month on five counts for tax fraud, two for bank fraud, and one for failure to disclose a foreign bank account, Manafort on Friday pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice by witness tampering.

Manafort was convicted last month of eight financial crimes in a separate trial in Virginia.

Paul Manafort has worn many hats: an worldwide political operative, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Trump confidant Roger Stone's business partner and now government witness.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who is now representing Trump in the Russian Federation probe, told Reuters on Friday that a guilty plea to avoid a second trial would not crush Manafort's chances of receiving an eventual presidential pardon.

"If Manafort is willing to give Mueller information about Trump's contacts with Russian Federation, whether the contacts were direct or indirect, then this really is a disaster for Trump and his associates". Prosecutors have said Kilimnik had active ties to a Russian intelligence service - including during 2016, when he was in contact with both Manafort and Gates.

On Friday (Saturday NZT), prosecutor Andrew Weissman said in court that Manafort had struck a "cooperation agreement" and would plead guilty to charges related to his Ukrainian political consulting work.

"It's not going to hurt him if he pleads guilty". The president has not said whether he would do so. Manafort could shed light on this question, in addition to others that we may not yet have even heard of, since it's a fair bet that Mueller is investigating some matters that have yet to be publicly revealed. All of these charges predate the time Paul spent with the president.

In point of fact, that is so: Manafort's two federal cases have involved his lobbying work on behalf of the now-former president of Ukraine, the way Manafort failed to disclose it as required by law and the way he concealed the millions of dollars he earned.

The counts derived from Manafort's work for former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his pro-Moscow political party between around 2005 and 2015.

His attorney, Kevin Downing, said he was motivated by personal factors. He instead agreed to admit wrongdoing and cooperate fully with Mueller, turning over any documents that may be relevant to the special counsel's investigation and testifying in any proceedings where that might be necessary.

The president drew a comparison to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, who on the same day as the Manafort conviction pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations and other charges.

In July 2016, just before the Republican National Convention, Manafort sought to get a message to Deripaska offering "private briefings" about the presidential race.

Eisen said he doesn't think Mueller would have offered the plea deal unless there was "very powerful evidence" that Manafort could contribute information important to the investigation.

"He was under tremendous pressure", the former judge said Sunday during an interview on "ABC This Week".

"I have someone pushing it on the NY Post".

"If you don't know what a cooperator is saying then it's a bad day for you because you're vulnerable".

U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Sunday, without evidence, that the ongoing criminal investigation into his 2016 campaign's links to Russian Federation is "not allowed under the law".
