Grassley Fires Back at Requests From Ford's Lawyers

The woman accusing Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's U.S. Supreme Court nominee, of sexual assault told a Senate committee she would be willing to testify later next week as a Friday deadline set by the Republican-led panel loomed.

Kavanaugh has offered to testify "as soon as possible, so that I can clear my name", he wrote in a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley Thursday.

"As you are aware, she's been receiving death threats which have been reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and she and her family have been forced out of their home", Katz wrote to the committee.

Ford has contended that at a house party in Washington's Maryland suburbs, a drunken Kavanaugh tried undressing her and stifling her cries on a bed before she fled.

Earlier this week Ford said she wished for the FBI to investigate her allegations before she offers testimony.

This isn't the first time allegations have come up during a Supreme Court confirmation hearing. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, acknowledged the seriousness of the accusation but said that "at the same time, this is no country for denying people due process." Sen.

Democratic senators, pointing to the highly charged Anita Hill hearings in October 1991, have defended Ford's request to have the Federal Bureau of Investigation do its own probe before she testifies. "And so nothing really else would remain of the investigation and background of the judge and we would vote on the nomination".

Ford said she "knew them both, and socialized with" them, according to a Washington Post report published Thursday.

Whelan has been involved in helping to advise Kavanaugh's confirmation effort and is close friends with both Kavanaugh and Leonard Leo, the head of the Federalist Society who has been helping to spearhead the nomination.

The attorneys also asked if the senators could preside over questioning instead of bringing in outside counsel, a senior congressional source with knowledge of the call told CNN.

It is possible Ford will be open to testifying sometime next week about the allegation, though the conditions under which she would do so have not yet been determined.

A handful of pivotal senators have yet to disclose how they will ultimately vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation, including Republican Senators Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

"Otherwise, there are these very serious allegations hanging over the head of a nominee who has emphatically denied them and that's just not a good way for us to end", Collins said. "I was like, where did she go?"

The accusation has jarred the 53-year-old conservative jurist's prospects for winning confirmation, which until Ford's emergence last week had seemed all but certain.

On Thursday, most Republicans had stuck to the timeline of holding a hearing on Monday, as well as Grassley's decision to limit the hearing to two witnesses: Kavanaugh and Ford. "I sincerely hope that Dr. Ford will accept my invitation to do so, either privately or publicly, on Monday".

CBS News has obtained the email sent by Ford's attorneys Thursday night to the Judiciary Committee after their call.
