Women die in flooded van driven by SC deputies

Florence flooding expected to last for days

The Marion County coroner has identified the two women who drowned in a Horry County sheriff's van on Tuesday night.

Thompson said there was one door to the containment area of the van where women were trapped.

Rescue crews needed about 45 minutes to find the van, which was underwater at that point, and plucked the Horry County deputies from the roof, the sheriff said.

The Horry County Sheriff's Office transport van was still in the water as of about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, WPDE reported.

"We want those who are responsible to be held accountable", it reads in part. "We are fully cooperating with the State Law Enforcement Division to support their investigation of this event". Once the bodies are recovered, they'll be transported to the Medical University of SC for autopsies, he said.

The two individuals being transported were confirmed dead by the Marion County Coroner. Richardson later told the Washington Post that sheriff's deputies often transfer mental-health patients saying, "It's a courtesy they do".

Hershberger told the station she took her mother ― who was diagnosed with schizophrenia ― to Waccamaw Center for Mental Health on Tuesday to meet with a therapist.

Some roads in Marion and Horry County are impacted by floods after Hurricane Florence passed through the area.

Two die in flooded sheriff's transport van

Authorities confirm two detainees drowned when a van was swept away in rising flood waters in SC. That effort resumed Wednesday morning, but Thompson said a specialized crew was being flown in from Charleston to assist. "It makes it seem like someone took a very unnecessary risk in creating the problem in the first place".

The N.C. Department of Agriculture issued the mortality totals as major flooding continues in the state due to the storm's drenching rains.

Bishop and Flood have been placed on administrative leave while three separate investigations are conducted into the deaths. The vehicle was traveling west on Highway 76 around ½ mile from the Little Pee Dee River when the vehicle was overtaken by flood waters.

As for Nicolette's sister, she has one question: "What would prompt you to endanger your life and the life of the people the back, why?" said Donnela. "It's come up 2 feet (0.6 metres) since just last night".

"The two deputies attempted to extricate the persons being transported", the news release said.

Harrowing police scanner audio provides details of the efforts to save the women, who could be heard talking as rescuers scrambled to save them.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday visited North Carolina, which is bearing the brunt of Florence's deadly deluge and where rivers are still rising while thousands of homes and roadways remain submerged.

India to merge three state-owned banks
He said the NPA curve was now taking a turn and the time was opportune to go ahead with consolidation of banks. Jaitley said that the government was making a conscious decision not to merge the operations of weak lenders.
