Catholic bishop accused of raping nun arrested by Indian police

He had complained of pain in his chest while being taken to Kottayam Police club from the Crime Branch office in Thrippunithura in Ernakulam district Friday night, PTI reported.

In a letter dated September 20, the Cardinal Oswald Gracias, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, said Bishop Franco Mulakkal would be temporarily relieved of his pastoral duties for the Diocese of Jalandhar. However, police can still arrest him if it has sufficient evidence, they said. And there is no need for him to take any permission from anyone.

In her police complaint, the nun alleged that Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions.

The unnamed 44-year-old nun logged a complaint with local police in June, claiming that the Catholic Church had failed to take action despite repeated appeals, BBC reported.

Franco Mulakkal was formally arrested after police questioned him for three days in the southern Indian city of Kochi.

Members of various Christian reformation organisations as also the nuns of the Missionaries of Jesus, who were staging a protest close to the Kerala High Court premises for the last 13 days for the bishop's arrest, erupted with joy as the news broke.

The 24-year-old winger's uncomplaining attitude, coupled with a precocious sense of responsibility, has endeared him to his manager.

Dozens of nuns, activists, students and advocates have been protesting outside a court in Kochi for two weeks demanding his prosecution.

He said the investigating officer was free to take a call on the issue.

The bishop had publically denied the accusations, saying that the nun was angry over disciplinary measures he had ordered against her. The development came a day after Pope Francis and the Catholic Bishop Conference of India temporarily relieved Mulakkal of his pastoral responsibilities of the Jalandhar diocese.

Though the ongoing agitation demanding the arrest would be stopped but legal fight till the nun gets justice would still be continued, five nuns said. "Even if he is accused of rape, he is still our guru", he said.

"I've photographs and videos of the nun with Mulakkal clicked on day after alleged incident".

"He is charged with rape", said Kochi's inspector general of police, Vijay Sakhare.
