According to a South China Morning Post report which quoted an unnamed source close to Ms Fan, the actress had been kept in a "holiday resort" used to investigate officials in a suburb in Jiangsu province.

The 37-year-old actress, whose June disappearance touched off wild speculation about her whereabouts, has appeared in the X-Men and Iron Man film franchises, attracting more than 62 million online followers in China.

Fan and companies related to her were ordered to pay around $42 million in late taxes and fees, along with a fine of $86 million.

Fan and companies she represented also evaded 248 million yuan ($36 million) in additional taxes, Xinhua said, but it gave no details regarding this figure.

If Fan doesn't pay the fines within the prescribed time limit, she could face criminal charges.

Fans and global news outlets have been speculating about Fan Bingbing's mysterious disappearance for the past 3 months as the top star had been completely missing from the public eye since July 1.

After June, when she posted her visit to a children's hospital on social media, she vanished from sight, to the dismay of her fans.

"I have experienced unprecedented pain and agony in recent months", she wrote.

Trump on Kim: Tough talk ... 'and then we fell in love'
Sanctions were directly referenced by Ri as a barrier to bilateral progress and as an example of US efforts to coerce the DPRK. By contrast, Trump in his remarks to the assembly on Tuesday, thanked Kim "for his courage and for the steps he has taken".

According to Xinhua's report, Fan and her studio were notified on Sunday that they must pay back taxes totaling 288 million yuan, as well as fines amounting to 596 million yuan. "Without the [Communist] party and the state's good policies, without the love from the people, there would be no Fan Bingbing".

Detention would be an extraordinary undoing of the globe-trotting actress, who recently crossed over into American cinema with roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Ironman 3.

Fan is known as China's highest-paid actor, with an income of 300 million yuan in 2017.

Speaking ominously of "enormous fears and worries" she faces over the mistakes she made in the past, she laments that, "I failed my country which nurtured me; I failed the country which trusted me; I failed the fans who loved me".

But her star has dimmed among authorities in China. She is supposed to appear in the upcoming female-focused spy thriller 355 alongside Cruz, Chastain, Marion Cotillard, and Lupita Nyong'o.

When Fan dropped out of sight, the Chinese government had just put in place salary caps for TV actors.

Reps for Fan Bingbing have not yet responded to Yahoo Entertainment's request for comment.
