Boris Johnson says Britain should use aid to pursue national priorities

Senior Tories hit back at Johnson over his claims Brexit plans 'deranged'

Mr Johnson demonstrated his power over the Conservative membership, attacking Theresa May's plan for Brexit in an address that drew around 1,000 delegates at the party's conference in Birmingham. But he has also drawn criticism for his leadership aspirations.

Mrs May said that the blueprint agreed at her country residence in July was not dead, despite being branded unworkable by European Union leaders in Salzburg and receiving a frosty reception from many Tory MPs and activists.

"Not because they believe they would enhance economic growth, but because they don't care about economic growth because they are more interested in redistributing wealth than in creating more of it", Hammond said.

Johnson's speech was a leadership pitch in all but name, and many Conservatives expect May to face a party coup soon after Brexit day - or even before, if there is no progress toward a deal.

Mr Hammond mocked his former Cabinet colleague by mimicking his style of speaking in an interview with the Daily Mail, in which he predicted that Mr Johnson will never become PM.

But her bid to revitalize her domestic agenda and steal the initiative from the main opposition Labour Party has been overshadowed by the party splits over Brexit.

When asked once what was the naughtiest thing she had ever done, May admitted to running through fields of wheat as a child.

He was loudly clapped and cheered as he said: "For one last time, I urge our friends in Government to deliver what the people voted for, to back Theresa May in the best way possible - by softly, quietly, and sensibly backing her original plan".

The comments "brought immediate comparisons on social media to the "lock her up" calls from Donald Trump's supporters about former USA presidential candidate Hilary Clinton", says Business Insider.

Donna Strickland: The 'laser jock' Nobel prize victor
Ashkin told the Nobel committee that he may not be able to give any interviews because "he is very busy with his latest paper ". Many (presumably under the age of 55) pointed out that this was the first time in their lifetime a woman had won the award.

But the conference has been dominated by Brexit, with eurosceptic lawmakers attracting hundreds of Conservative members to their events on the fringes. But she stops short of saying Mr. Johnson would make a good leader or that he should be pushing for the job now. But undoubtedly the biggest reaction came from his attack on the Prime Minister's Brexit proposals; cheers and enthusiastic clapping as he urged the party to "chuck Chequers".

"For the first time in decades, it will be this country that controls and chooses who we want to come here".

"But what we've been doing here at conference of course and I think what matters to people out there is what the government does and what we focus on in terms of their day to day lives and what really matters to them".

"What it says is, if a conflict situation, armed conflict obviously, appears to be arising, the Northern Ireland people themselves will have a referendum", he said.

"How reasonable is it on the basis of that, to say, and as a result of that, in order to keep the whole of the United Kingdom happy we decided we would all of us join, and forever after, this common regulatory framework".

"Boris is a great mate of mine, we have a very knockabout friendship, but quite a lot of his ideas, I think, are good headlines but not necessarily good policies".

And she will look to turn the tide of internal party anger towards Jeremy Corbyn's Labour, suggesting on the back of the anti-Semitism row that it is now the new nasty party with the Conservatives as the party of patriotism, business, aspiration and "above all a party of Unionism".

"Our [Brexit plan] does that, it's the only plan on the table at the moment that does". And we have a guarantee for the people of Northern Ireland and we are upholding that.
