A showdown rollcall over confirmation seemed likely over the weekend.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., with Sen. If Kavanaugh clears Friday's procedural hurdle, that would set up a final confirmation vote as early as Saturday. Roche wrote an opinion piece published by Slate on Wednesday evening, United States time, where he says he was a roommate of Kavanaugh at Yale.

There are nine staff members - both Republicans and Democrats - who have access to the report and can brief members who don't want to read it in detail. However, senators would be doing so at a contentious time. Unusually large numbers of Capitol Hill Police officers restricted movements in corridors and formed wedges around senators walking through hallways.

Amid complaints that some lawmakers were being confronted outside their homes, McConnell claimed on the Senate floor that the protesters were "part of the organized effort" to derail Kavanaugh's nomination.

Democratic Senator Kamala Harris, who is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, tweeted that Ford "deserves better".

Lindsey Graham Wednesday chided President Donald Trump for mocking the woman who accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

"So President Trump went through a factual rendition, that I didn't particularly like, and I would tell him to knock it off. You're not helping", Trump ally Sen.

"This is unfair. What they're doing to this good, decent man can not stand", Graham said. Now the New York Department of Taxation is "vigorously pursuing" a review of the Trumps' activities.

Kavanaugh's nomination remains in limbo this week, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation looks into allegations of sexual assault made by numerous women.

At a campaign rally in MS rally on Tuesday, the audience laughed as Trump ran through a list of what he described as holes in Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"The committee stands by its statement, which is completely truthful, " the committee Republicans said. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, called it "wholly inappropriate and in my view unacceptable", and Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said on NBC's "Today" show that the remarks were "kind of appalling".

Two Democrats, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, are yet to declare their intentions.

"Standard procedures often need to be modified for nonstandard situations", Klain said.

Flake has clashed repeatedly with Trump over his behaviour and is retiring at year's end.

Following Ford's testimony last Thursday, Trump called her a "very credible witness".

"I had one beer!" he said, impersonating Ford.

Kavanaugh came up in Washington through partisan politics; he worked on the investigation that led to Clinton's impeachment, and later he worked for former president George W. Bush.

President Trump said that if Kavanaugh did lie to Congress, then "that would not be acceptable", but the White House has said the administration does not feel that Kavanaugh lied under oath.

Feminist author Jessica Valenti tweeted: "I don't have it in me to say something outraged about Trump mocking Dr Blasey Ford". "He is a fine man and great intellect".

Mr Kavanaugh has emphatically denied Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that he sexually assaulted her at a gathering when they were teenagers. "We are profoundly disappointed that after the tremendous sacrifice she made in coming forward, those directing the FBI investigation were not interested in seeking the truth".

Trump's mockery reflected a growing frustration among some in the White House, and by the president, that her story has not received the same level of scrutiny as Kavanaugh's, said a person close to the process who was not authorized to speak publicly. By Monday, he was highlighting gaps in Ford's memory.

Ramirez has said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her when they both attended Yale University.

Collins, a Republican from ME, similarly condemned Trump's comments, telling CNN's Manu Raju they "were just plain wrong".
