The seven officials are charged with hacking, stealing private and sensitive information and publishing it as retaliation.

It cites attacks on the World Anti-Doping Agency, Ukrainian transport systems, the 2016 U.S. presidential race and others as very likely the work of the GRU. WADA publicly called out the Russian military agency for the information operation.

"The vivid imagination of our colleagues from the United Kingdom has no boundaries indeed [.] it's undignified for the country, which pretends to play one of the leading roles in the world", she said.

"This is the actions of a pariah state, and we will continue working with allies to isolate them; make them understand they can not continue to conduct themselves in such a way", he said. The athletes were specifically targeted because they spoke out against the Russian state-sponsored doping program. The International Paralympic Committee imposed a blanket ban on Russian athletes in its 2016 games.

Russian Federation carried out retaliatory attacks against other actors as well. They are accused of sophisticated cyberintrusions and the victims were anti-doping agencies and officials, sporting federations, and almost 250 athletes. Its old acronym, GRU, is still more widely used.

The United States sanctioned GRU officers including its chief, Igor Korobov, in 2016 and 2018 for attempted interference in the 2016 us election and cyber attacks.

Fancy Bear is a nickname for a GRU hacking group. And after the media hype is over, whatever case they have against Russian Federation is not shown to the public for scrutiny. In some instances, WADA documents were altered, officials said.

"We intercepted it and expelled the four men from the country".

They are said to have had €20,000 and $20,000 in cash with them.

"I also hope that responsible members of the worldwide news media will cast a suspecting eye on future "hack and leak" operations which seek in part to manipulate stories in furtherance of Russian state interests", Demers said. The suspects are all allegedly members of Unit 74455, a branch of GRU.

Alexei Morenetz and Yevgeny Serebriakov were described by officials as "cyberoperators".

The indictments include charges of money laundering, using virtual currencies like bitcoin, wire fraud and identify theft.

Dutch Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld made the allegation at a press conference in the Hague, saying Dutch authorities disrupted the attempt by Russian intelligence agents in April.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has said GRU officers were behind an attempt to kill former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter with a nerve agent in the English city of Salisbury in March.

"Bringing the concrete findings of intelligence services into the public arena is an unusual step", Bijleveld said. In the trunk, officials said, were Wi-Fi hacking tools.

Britain and Australia on Thursday blamed Russia's military intelligence service for some of the biggest cyber attacks of recent years - including one on the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 United States presidential campaign. Four of the attacks were newly attributed on Thursday. According to tech security companies there is little sign that Russian hackers will try to repeat their campaign in the run up to the 2016 Presidential election, but a report like this is a handy way of reminding Russian intelligence that western spies are watching.

Between July and August 2015 multiple email accounts belonging to a small UK-based TV station were accessed and content stolen.

In August 2017, confidential medical files relating to a number of worldwide athletes were released.
