Earlier on Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House had concluded that the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe found no evidence of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh.

Republican senator Chuck Grassley said he received a briefing from staff on the confidential report and says "there's nothing in it that we didn't already know".

A Chicago native, retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens on Thursday said that Brett Kavanaugh's testimony before the Senate Judiciary committee last week convinced him that Kavanaugh should not be on the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has written an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal defending his independence and impartiality.

In the op-ed, Kavanaugh stood firm in his assertion that, if confirmed, he'd be a trusted associate justice, writing that the US could count on him "to be the same kind of judge and person I have been for my entire 28-year legal career: hardworking, even-keeled, open-minded, independent and dedicated to the Constitution and the public good".

The last undecided Democrat, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, said while leaving the secure room on Thursday that he would have to come back on Friday because he'd been kicked out so Republicans could have their turn.

Special inquiries are different from FBI criminal investigations, so the White House counsel set the parameters of what FBI agents examined.

"This investigation found no hint of misconduct", Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley said in a statement.

The White House believes the FBI report addressed the Senate's questions about Kavanaugh, Shah told CNN, adding that the FBI reached out to 10 people in its investigation and "comprehensively interviewed" nine of them.

A second Democrat who had been seen as a doubt, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, yesterday announced that she would be voting against Mr Kavanaugh's appointment.

Between July and August 2015 multiple email accounts belonging to a small UK-based TV station were accessed and content stolen. And after the media hype is over, whatever case they have against Russian Federation is not shown to the public for scrutiny.

Three Republicans who could be key to whether Mr Kavanaugh is confirmed - Senators Jeff Flake, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski - have criticised Mr Trump for mocking Dr Ford at a political rally in MS on on Tuesday.

"I want to make it clear to these people who are chasing my members around the hall here or harassing them at the airports or going to their homes. I'm ready to work with the President to confirm a nominee who is suited for the honor and distinction of serving this lifetime appointment".

In his op-ed, Kavanaugh stressed that "the Supreme Court must never be viewed as a partisan institution".

"Regardless of what you think about the allegations, the way he reacted to the questions presented doesn't show he has the right temperament", she said of Kavanaugh's testimony. Two Republican "no" votes could sink the nomination. If confirmed, he would deepen conservative control of the court.

Kavanaugh sharply attacked Democratic senators, calling himself the victim of "a calculated and orchestrated political hit" fuelled by anger on the left at Trump's 2016 election win over Democrat Hillary Clinton, his conservative judicial record and revenge on behalf of Clinton and her husband Bill.

Today I was arrested protesting the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, a man who has been accused by multiple women of sexual assault.

"Democrats agreed that the investigation's scope should be limited".

Earlier this week Donald Trump was criticised for imitating Dr Ford at a rally in Mississippi.

Ford testified last week at a dramatic Judiciary Committee hearing that when she was 15, a drunken 17-year-old Kavanaugh pinned her down, tried to remove her clothing and covered her mouth after she screamed.

"An FBI supplemental background investigation that did not include an interview of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford - nor the witnesses who corroborate her testimony - can not be called an investigation", her legal team said in a statement.
