Tropical wave could affect western Caribbean

Forecasters said Tropical Storm Michael is likely to form Sunday night and could reach the Gulf coast by Wednesday. The NWS puts the chances of formation at 40 percent over the next 48 hours.

The disturbance in the Caribbean is now a Tropical Depression.

Happy Saturday night! While you're enjoying your weekend, things are looking to become busy in the world of weather. It is important to note that all of the northern Gulf Coast from southeast MS to the western Florida Panhandle remains within the forecast cone.

When this depression enters the Gulf of Mexico, it will likely begin to strengthen because of very warm waters and relatively weak wind shear. This storm does not pose a threat to Florida or the USA, but swells generated by Leslie continue to create life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. It is 120 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, and is 240 miles south-southwest of the western tip of Cuba, according to the hurricane center's 11 p.m. ET update Saturday.
