Pompeo says North Korea ready to let inspectors into missile, nuclear sites

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang

Wang Yi said he told Pompeo during a meeting Monday that a shadow has been cast "over the future of China-U.S. relations".

Specifically, Pompeo revealed that North Korea agreed to allow worldwide inspectors to survey their nuclear and missile testing sites.

"We urge the U.S.to stop such misguided activities".

Pompeo did not specify when the summit will be or if Pyongyang has been ruled out as a location.

A meeting of top United States and Chinese diplomats in Beijing to discuss North Korean nuclear disarmament has got off to a frosty start.

During the last three days of his Asia trip, Pompeo met with top leaders from all three nations in Japan, South and North Korea.

But unlike his last visit to Beijing in June, Pompeo did not have a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Kim said he believed the dialogue between the two countries would continue to develop favorably "based on the deep confidence between the two leaders of the two countries", and expressed gratitude to Trump for making a honest effort to implement the agreement made at their historic June summit, KCNA said.

"I hope your trip to North Korea and the upcoming second US-North Korea summit will provide a good opportunity for achieving irreversible, decisive progress in terms of denuclearisation and the peace process on the Korean peninsula".

When asked once what was the naughtiest thing she had ever done, May admitted to running through fields of wheat as a child. And we have a guarantee for the people of Northern Ireland and we are upholding that.

Pompeo has refused to discuss details of negotiations, including a United States position on North Korea's demand for a formal end to the Korean War and a proposal from Seoul for such a declaration to be accompanied by a shutdown of the North's main known nuclear facility.

Mr Pompeo described his fourth trip to the North Korean capital as "another step forward to denuclearisation".

North Korea recently asked for "corresponding" reciprocal measures for the possible dismantlement of its important Yongbyon nuclear complex, a demand experts say might refer to declaring an end to the war or easing sanctions imposed on the country. Pompeo was hit by North Korean officials a few months ago as having a "gangster-like demand for denuclearization".

The two diplomats had warmer words regarding efforts to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Pompeo also told reporters that a second summit between Trump and Kim was "pretty close".

Pompeo and Kim made "significant progress" in "a long process" to denuclearize North Korea and "will continue to make significant progress and we are further along in making that progress than any administration in an awfully long time", he said.

A senior U.S. State Department official said the United States still expected cooperation with Beijing on efforts to denuclearise North Korea, whose chief ally is China. It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.

The trip was the latest turn in a diplomatic saga that saw Trump and Kim threaten each other with nuclear war a year ago only for them to hold their historic summit in Singapore.

Moon also said there was a possibility of Kim holding a summit with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.
