A few days ago, Microsoft was force to pause the rollout of Windows 10 version 1809, as upgraders complained that files in their computers' Documents, Pictures and Downloads folders had vanished.

Microsoft on Tuesday offered an explanation, an apology and a future resolution for its flawed Windows 10 version 1809 release last week, which caused files to go missing for some users.

Over the weekend, Microsoft pulled the latest update build of Windows 10 (version 1809) after a bug that flew past its Feedback Hub without the company's notice resulted in mass file deletion for some users.

Microsoft investigated isolated reports of users missing files after updating.

"We have fully investigated all reports of data loss, identified and fixed all known issues in the update, and conducted internal validation", said John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery. Based on feedback from users, we introduced code in the October 2018 Update to remove these empty, duplicate known folders.

Users who lost data during the upgrade to version 1809 are advised to call 13 20 58 in Australia for free assistance with recovering their files, Microsoft said. However, it appears to affect files from Documents, Pictures, and other folders. You can head over to Microsoft to learn about Windows 10 1709 known issues; there are none with the April 2018 Update. You create "D:\documents" and change the location of the files known folder from the original "old" location c:\users\username\documents to D:\documents.

"If you have a Microsoft store in your neighbourhood you can visit it for a fix as well; perhaps you will be their first actual customer!" The company also states it will provide an update as soon as a fixed version of the Windows 10 October 2018 will be rolled out again.

This includes fixes for system components such as the Windows kernel, graphics and file systems, the wireless networking and peripherals subsystems, along with the JET database engine, Windows Media Player and the Edge and Internet Explorer web browsers among others. They should have only deleted the folders if they were actually empty! To make sure to remedy such issues, the Windows Insider team says that it is adding the ability to flag the severity of the feedback that they initiate.

Dona Sarkar, engineering leader of the Windows Insider Program has tweeted that Microsoft is able to restore the removed files.

Microsoft has also changed the workaround text on its website.
