Columbus Day 2018: What Is Open & Closed On The Holiday?

While the celebration was held on what is typically Columbus Day, organizers of the event say Indigenous Peoples Day is not meant to be an alternative. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but, unlike most federal holidays the USA financial and stock markets are open for business. So, the city chose Veterans Day.

"Therefore, on Columbus Day, we honor the skilled navigator and man of faith, whose courageous feat brought together continents and has inspired countless others to pursue their dreams and convictions - even in the face of extreme doubt and tremendous adversity". "We thought that was something that was important". However, UPS does not observe Columbus Day and locations will be open.

Just this year, more and more cities have chose to ditch Columbus Day and instead celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day every second Monday of October. In Hawaii, it's called Discoverer's Day and since 2016 Vermont residents have observed Indigenous People Day.

Indigenous Peoples Day is the same day as Columbus Day, which this year is on October 8, 2018. "I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of our diverse history and all who have contributed to shaping this Nation". Statues and memorials devoted to Columbus now draw the regular attention of protesters and vandals, while his parades are getting rebranded and cancelled. "If it is proposed to city council that this be changed for next year, that is something council would have to take up".

Last year, Los Angeles became the biggest city to stop honoring Columbus.

"Columbus did not "discover" a land that was already inhabited by millions of indigenous peoples and hundreds of indigenous nations".

There were four replay challenges in the first four innings - all involving calls by first base umpire Angel Hernandez . David Price suffered the loss as he surrendered three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings.

Sophomore psychology major Mackenzie Maslowski said she does not celebrate the holiday because she does not know enough about Columbus. Amid the debate, many also note that on October 12, 1492, the explorer made landfall in the Bahamas, not in what later became the United States. But the connection, or lack thereof, to the city's name remains unclear.

Few educational texts in this country return to reliable, primary sources when it comes to discussions about Columbus. And though NY isn't listed among cities and states that officially celebrate the latter, there is a 2018 Indigenous Peoples Day celebration planned for NYC.

Columbus Day has been officially celebrated since 1937 after President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared it a Federal Holiday. Joseph Contino, board member of the Columbus Italian Festival, told the Associated Press.

"I appreciate that for many people, including some Italian-Americans, the celebration of Columbus is viewed as belittling the suffering of indigenous peoples at the hands of Europeans".

The Columbus Italian Club shared an article from The Dispatch about the city's decision forego observing Columbus Day with a single thumbs-down emoji as the caption.
