To add to his long list of terrifying sentiments towards journalists, Trump praised Montana Republican Greg Gianforte for assaulting a reporter during his campaign last May.

"Any guy that can do a body slam, he's my candidate, he's my guy", Mr. Trump said, making a theatrical body-slam gesture with his arms.

Gianforte plead guilty to a charge of misdemeanor assault of Ben Jacobs, political reporter for The Guardian, as he covered a Montana special election in May 2017.

"We endorsed Greg really early, but I heard that he had body slammed a reporter".

He also wrote a letter of apology in which he acknowledged assaulting Mr Jacobs for asking "a legitimate question about healthcare policy". "He's going to lose the election, '" Trump said. But as he left Washington to travel to the rally Thursday, Trump warned of "very severe" consequences for the apparent killing.

"I shouldn't say this", he said, then adding "there's nothing to be embarrassed about".

Trump's remarks on Gianforte's assault come amid new evidence surrounding the disappearance of the US-based Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, who is feared to have been brutally killed inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

"The President of the United States tonight applauded the assault on an American journalist who works for the Guardian", John Mulholland, US editor of The Guardian, said in a statement.
