Trump threatens to send army to US-Mexico border in migrant row

TECUN UMAN, Guatemala - Waving Honduran flags and carrying umbrellas to protect against the sun, thousands of migrants massed along Guatemala's muddy Suchiate River crossing into Mexico on Friday, demanding to be let in despite U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of retaliation.

Donald Trump threatened Thursday to deploy the US military to close the US-Mexico border as a caravan of 4,000 immigrants fleeing Honduras in search of asylum approached the southern border of Mexico.

'In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have nearly no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught - and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!' he wrote in one tweet. The foreign minister, Luis Videgaray, asked the United Nations to assist with what could be a crush of requests.

Mexico says the migrants will be processed and that those without a legitimate case to travel onwards or stay in Mexico will be returned to their countries of origin.

I said look we have lousy laws.

"Only God on high can stop us", Escobar said.

Honduran migrants heading in a caravan to the United States, walk in direction to the border with Mexico as they leave Guatemala City on October 18, 2018.

More Honduran migrants tried to join a caravan of several thousand trekking through Guatemala on Wednesday, defying calls by authorities not to make the journey.

Trump emphasized that if Mexico is unable to keep the caravan from entering the United States, then he will use the U.S. military, not the National Guard, to keep the caravan from coming into the country.

Trump spoke with the incoming Mexican president earlier this month and claimed that "we will work well together".

OPEC slashes growth forecast for global oil demand
The global benchmark has retreated after hitting a four-year high of $US86.74 on October 3. Brent crude futures were down $1.32, or 1.6 percent, at $81.77 a barrel by 0543 GMT.

The Honduran migrant caravan is seen as a outcome of poverty and insecurity in the Central American country, wracked by gang and drug-related violence.

"Well, we're looking at a lot of things", he said.

Mexico's southern border is notoriously porous and it was unclear how numerous migrants would attempt to cross legally at the bridge.

Some of them talked among themselves.

Still, the idea that Mexico could close its porous southern border - or that the United States would choke off the lucrative trade and other traffic between the two nations - strained the imagination.

The group has been dubbed the "march of the migrants".

"We are about law and order and borders and jobs, and they are about allowing crime to enter our country with open borders".

He called on Mexico to ensure the migrants do not reach the United States border while threatening Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador with financial penalties.

It is unclear if they are trying to swim across to the Mexico side of border, go back to Guatemala or just get relief from the crowds on the bridge.

"Because many of those people, a percentage, a fairly big percentage of those people are criminals and they want to come into our country and they're criminals".
