According to the Associated Press, Lion Air airline is a fast-growing low-priced airline with a mixed safety record.

Indonesian TV showed dozens of people waiting anxiously outside the Pangkal Pinang airport and officials bringing out plastic chairs. Before the tragic accident, the plane's pilots had asked for a return to base, but the aircraft vanished from the radar shortly afterwards.

The aircraft subsequently resumed its climb to around 5,400 ft., where it remained for most of the remaining flight. It is a single aisle plane used for short-haul travel.

Mabaya said indications at this stage are that there were no South African citizens on the Boeing 737 MAX 8, which crashed minutes after leaving Indonesia's capital, Jakarta.

The plane is among the latest models from Boeing that is said to be more fuel-efficient with advanced communication equipment.

How is Lion Air's safety record?

Incidentally, Lion Air was removed from the European Union's air safety blacklist in June 2016.
