Daniel, 18, from Los Angeles and a gap year student at the Hartman Institute Hevruta program told the Post he wanted to do something to show his solidarity with the people of Pittsburgh. On Saturday, Hissirch, appearing to hold back tears, said: "It's a very horrific crime scene". A law enforcement source told CNN that investigators believe a Gab account that espoused anti-Semitic views belonged to Bowers. In another, he slammed U.S. President Donald Trump for doing nothing to stop an "infestation" of the United States by Jews.

Mr Jones said Mr Bowers was armed with an assault rifle and three handguns.

Chicago police did not receive any threats to the city or the vigil, but officers and K9s were deployed to the vigil to ensure a visible presence, officials said. After a shootout, he surrendered.

Bowers has been arrested and is being treated for gunshot wounds at a hospital. All of them were middle-aged or over, including two brothers and a 97-year-old woman. Several more people - including four area police officers - were injured in the attack. Two of the six people injured were in critical condition.

"I know a few of the people who are always there that early, and he is one of them", she said. I won't say all the time.

The comment was posted on Gab, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based social networking service created as right-wing alternative to Twitter. Bowers' virulent anti-Semitic views were evident in prolific online postings.

Shortly after reports of the shooting emerged, Mr Trump said in a tweet he was watching what he described as a "devastating" situation.

"I think the approach that we need to be looking at is how we take the guns - which is the common denominator of every mass shooting in America - out of the hands of those who are looking to express hatred through murder", he said.

Hissrich said extra patrols have been assigned to "sensitive locations around Pittsburgh", including at a vigil planned for Sunday night.

Standing in the crowd, Rachael, 22 from Pittsburgh said "I think it's awesome they are supporting Pittsburgh".

The Anti-Defamation League said the Pittsburgh rampage is the deadliest attack on Jews in American history.

On April 13, 2014, a pair of shootings occurred at a Jewish community centre and a Jewish retirement community, both located in Overland Park, Kansas.

Trump proposed similar measures in the aftermath of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed. The gunman walks in, ' Rabbi Perlman recounted tearfully.
