Pakistani cleric Maulana Samiul Haq known as ‘father of Taliban’ shot dead Reports

Muslim cleric Sami ul-Haq, known as the "Father of the Taliban" for having taught some of the Afghan Islamist movement's leaders, was killed on Friday in a Pakistani city, a relative and his deputy said.

Haq ran an Islamic seminary in the north-western Pakistani town of Noshera and was a teacher to most of the Afghan Taliban's leaders, including the militia's founding father, Mullah Omer, said Taliban spokesman Yousaf Shah.

Earlier reports had emerged suggesting that Maulana Samiul Haq was shot dead by gunmen riding a motorcycle.

Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has condemned the assassination of Maulana Samiul Haq and sought the report from the Inspector General of Punjab (IGP) police.

He said the government funded Haq's seminary for institutionalising modern curriculum, while the slain cleric had also backed the government for the anti-polio drive.

A divisive figure, Haq was known as the "Father of the Taliban". Maulana Sami was a heart patient, Hamid said.

Crashed Lion Air plane had technical problem on prior flight
How is Lion Air's safety record? Incidentally, Lion Air was removed from the European Union's air safety blacklist in June 2016. The plane is among the latest models from Boeing that is said to be more fuel-efficient with advanced communication equipment.

His seminary is in the Akora Khattak in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.

He was well versed in Arabic but also used Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, and the regional language of Pashto. He was twice elected as member of the Senate.

The family of the religious scholar and the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Sami (JUI-S) officials confirmed the news of his assassination.

Samiul Haq was now the chancellor of Darul Uloom Haqqania, a Deobandi Islamic seminary which is the alma mater of many prominent Taliban members. He said that Haq's services would always be remembered.

Haq's killing has come when religio-political parties in Pakistan are protesting on the streets against the Supreme Court's decision to acquit Asia Bibi.
