Charles and Camilla receive official welcome as their West African tour begins

Britain's Prince Charles has begun a nine-day Africa tour aimed at strengthening ties with Commonwealth nations.

The Prince of Wales on Thursday (Nov 1) called on The Gambia to work with Britain to promote democracy almost two years after the small West African nation emerged from decades of authoritarian rule. Meanwhile, Camilla, who is President of the Women of the World Festival, will attend an event featuring Ghana's top female leaders. This will be the Duchess of Cornwall's first visit to Ghana.

The royal couple is expected to visit Ghana before ending their trip in Nigeria on November 6 - 8.

The Royal Highness' visit to Ghana comes at an "opportune moment", said British High Commissioner, H.E. Iain Walker.

The Gambia was welcomed back into the Commonwealth during a visit by the Gambian president to London earlier this year.
