Rep. Beto O'Rourke didn't go quietly to defeat.

Beto O'Rourke grabbed glowing national headlines by visiting all 254 Texas counties and often drawing large crowds - even in fiercely conservative areas other Democrats had long since written off.

O'Rourke raised more than $70 million during the heated Senate race, including more than $38 million from the July to September campaign period alone. A Democrat hasn't won a Texas Senate seat since 1988, and no one from the party has captured any statewide office since 1994, the nation's longest political losing streak.

It was the fifth goal of the season for the Frenchman who kept Arsenal's unbeaten run intact, now extended to 14 games. They created more chances with Arsenal having 12 and Liverpool 13, but putting it on frame was a struggle for both.

Trump took the unexpected step of travelling to reliably Republican Texas during crunch time, staging a Houston rally to energise his base for Cruz just two weeks before Election Day.

Mr Cruz's actions, especially the government shutdown, alienated many of his Republican colleagues in the Senate. He set fundraising records and made Cruz work for the victory, but Cruz ultimately pulled out a three-point victory. "They're energised", Cruz said on Monday. "They're filled with rage and hatred for the president". Cruz argued that his opponent's support for gun control and universal health care were too liberal for the Lone Star State.

As Cruz has embraced the White House, O'Rourke concentrated on mobilizing young voters, Texans living along the U.S. -Mexico border and people who moved to the state from elsewhere. In turn, Cruz garnered praise from President Trump, who referred to his former political rival as "Beautiful Ted" in the days ahead of the vote.
