Ventura County sheriff's spokesman says gunman is dead inside the bar.

Thousand Oaks is located in Ventura County, which is just west of Los Angeles.

At least six people, including one officer, were injured in the shooting the Borderline Bar and Grill at about 23:20 local time on Wednesday.

Ventura County Fire Department said there was an "ongoing active shooter incident" reported at Borderline bar and grill.

Deputies believed that the shooter was inside the bar, which was surrounded.

Witnesses told ABC News that a man fired several shots from a handgun before tossing smoke grenades and firing again.

CNN spoke to one woman who says her son dragged his wounded girlfriend outside to safety.

Wednesday night was college night at Borderline, with the restaurant filled with young people, including some from nearby California Lutheran University and from Pepperdine University in Malibu.

There were reports of more gunfire as officers responded.

Pictures and video footage show firefighters and first responders flooding the scene after multiple injuries were reported. The injured included a deputy, Kuredjian said.

Kuredjian said the shooter no longer posed a threat to surrounding communities, but could not confirm if he was shot dead or captured.

This is a developing story.

Officials said hundreds of people, most of whom college students, were inside the establishment at the time of the shooting, according to KABC.
