Women win big in United States midterm elections 2018

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI became the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Sharice Davids defeated a Republican incumbent in Kansas to become the first openly LGBTQ woman to represent Kansas.

The House is getting its first two Muslim women and MA is getting its first black congresswoman while Arizona and Tennessee stand to elect their first woman senators in Tuesday's midterm elections.

The high-profile midterm cycle that produced a record number of women contenders and candidates of colour means a number of winners will take office as trailblazers.

Pressley was the first black woman on Boston's City Council, and she defeated 10-term incumbent Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary. Meanwhile the Arizona senate race is too close to call, but either Republican or Democrat, the victor will be the state's first woman in the seat. Two others - Sharice Davids in Kansas' 3rd District and Deb Haaland in New Mexico's 1st District - will become the first Native American women in the chamber.

But for Congresswoman-Elect Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), it is important to keep what is happening in perspective, and not whitewash the wrongdoing of fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions - a sentiment she made clear to CNN's Chris Cuomo. While they did take control of the House of Representatives, liberals suffered some painful defeats, especially in the Senate.

Jahana Hayes similarly will join the freshman class as Connecticut's first black female representative.

A lawyer and former MMA fighter, Davids became the first Native American congresswoman and the first lesbian congresswoman from Kansas.

Early in-person voting tops 2M in North Carolina
But with an open Senate seat thanks to the retirement of Republican Bob Corker, voters are more than eager this year. Voters with no party affiliation had turned out at a rate of 23.6 percent, or 9,970 of 42,110 registered voters.

Kate Brown, who is bisexual, became the first openly LGBT person elected governor in 2016 when she won her OR race.

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala noted that both of her opponents in the race for a House seat from Florida were women.

On Tuesday night Stevens, a 35-year old who served on Obama's Auto Task Force, won her race to represent Michigan's 11th district.

(2) Kristi Noem became the first woman in South Dakota history to be elected governor. Such representation is particularly marked when President Trump has made flagrant anti-Muslim bigotry a key part of his political rhetoric, and some state-level Republicans are attempting to disenfranchise Native Americans en masse with Jim Crow tactics.

At least 99 women will represent Americans in the House, surpassing the previous record of 84. By early 2018, more than 42,000 women had reached out to Emily's List about running for office, and 356 women Democrats filed paperwork to run for Congress (120 Republican women filed to run).

White women have been a target of attack by progressives all year, but many such complaints surfaced during the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was falsely accused of sexual harassment in October.

"Powered by a massive turnout of women and fuelled by our incredible candidates, House Democrats gained several seats in the heartland", Democratic representative Cheri Bustos of IL said in a statement Tuesday night after House control was called for Democrats. Women's issues are the economy, their education, their gun control.
