Cross Counter has won the $7.05 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington, beating Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran.

On a rain-affected track and ridden by McEvoy for trainer Charlie Appleby, Cross Counter defeated Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran in an all-northern hemisphere finish.

It was also a first win in the race for Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin team, for whom Appleby saddled Masar to their maiden Derby win at Epsom in June.

The Cup dates back to 1865 and was the result of a rivalry between two horse race organizing committees - the Victorian Jockey Club and the Victorian Turf Club, with the latter introducing the event as a handicap race.

"Today's tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks these horses face every time they run, and highlights that behind the gloss and glamour of Cup celebrations there is a dark reality".

The Cliffsofmoher was put down after suffering a fractured right shoulder.

One of sport's greatest hoodoos is no more and the billion-dollar Sheikh, whose earliest memory was galloping through the desert on a white stallion with his father, can finally say he is a Melbourne Cup victor.

McEvoy's great triumph was also Cathy's first time seeing him win the Melbourne Cup, which he has managed to achieve on three occasions.

Speaking with an SES officer, the "police liaison" spokesperson for the group said they were there because they thought focus was misplaced on the famous race.

President, I did an opening monologue today, and I had no idea you were going to invite me up here". "We're driving them insane ". Alisyn Camerota, herself a former Fox News reporter, wondered aloud if Fox could even still be called a " news organization ".

English trainer Charlie Fellowes says he feels like a victor after A Prince Of Arran finished in third place behind Cross Counter in the Melbourne Cup. "I'm just delighted. What a ride".

"I'm getting wet here but I don't give a stuff because I'm enjoying winning my third Melbourne Cup", McEvoy said.

THE alarm bells should be ringing for Australian racing after Europe dominated the Melbourne Cup.

It was a relief for McEvoy, who was blocked when Aidan O'Brien-trained Cliffsofmoher pulled up lame early in the race.

"We collided with the horse that broke down pretty hard and it put us out of play completely", Avilius' jockey Glyn Schofield said.

The Irish four-year-old was a 20/1 outsider for the Melbourne Cup and rounded the bend into the home straight midway through the pack. "Melbourne see you next year", Fellowes, who is the chairman of Newmarket Open Weekend, wrote on Twitter after the race.

His death comes after Verema (2013), Admire Rakti and Araldo (2014) and Red Cadeaux (2015) suffered injuries either during or immediately after previous Melbourne cups.

The track was downgraded from good to a Heavy 8 before the rain passed, allowing the course to come back to a Soft 6 at race time.
