Florida: Voting rights of more than 1 million felons restored

Florida residents to vote on felon voter rights initiative

Desmond Meade, president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, led the initiative that landed Amendment 4 on the ballot.

The constitutional amendment exclude people with murder or sex crime convictions, they would still have to go through the clemency process to have their voters right restored.

According to the Sentencing Project's 2016 estimates, the measure will benefit almost 1.5 million people in Florida who have completed their felony sentences but can't vote.

Florida voters Tuesday overwhelmingly approved an amendment to allow ex-felons who have served prison terms to vote, allowing another 1.5 million to take part in the 2020 presidential election.

The Trial of Mexican Drug Lord "El Chapo" Starts Monday in Brooklyn
He has been in solitary confinement in a high-security NY prison since Mexico extradited him to the United States in January 2017. El Chapo pleaded not guilty to all the crimes against him - global drug trafficking, gun charges, money laundering, and more .

Florida was among a minority of states that required additional waiting time or extra steps for felons to regain their voting rights.

While more than 150,000 Floridians had their voting rights restored during Democrat Charlie Crist's four years in office, Gov. Rick Scott's ascension to the office seven years ago put a halt to that.

All U.S. states except for ME and Vermont bar felons from voting while they are incarcerated, but most restore that right when the inmate is released or following a period of parole or probation. The measure passed with 64.4 percent support, officials said.

"This is an issue that transcends rural-urban-suburban divide". Amendments require a super-majority of 60 percent to become law in the state.
