A stand is set up in front of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris ahead of ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I

Macron delivered the address, with its historical resonance tied to the nationalist movements that gave rise to World War I, nearly three weeks after Trump adopted the label of "nationalist" at a campaign rally.

Initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, the Forum aims to revive collective governance, worldwide cooperation, norms, and institutions at a time when global challenges have never been so pressing.

Macron led dozens of heads of state and government including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on foot towards a viewing stand at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triopmhe.

He said: 'The Trumps could easily have got to Beaulleau by road too - with a limousine escort it would take less than an hour'.

President Trump joined French leader Emmanuel Macron on Sunday as almost 70 world leaders gathered in Paris to mark 100 years since the end of World War I.

He lamented that the spirit of revenge and humiliation after World War I sparked renewed nationalism that led to World War II.

For Trump, dressed in a dark blue suit and red tie, the ceremony marked the beginning of a day in which he also attended in a luncheon with the world leaders and then delivered a speech at the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial - a day after he skipped a visit to a different cemetery.

Leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan were among those who listened as Merkel, Macron and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres lauded the UN and institutions like it that seek multilateral solutions to global problems.

However, the Trumps canceled a planned trip to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, 50 miles outside Paris, on Saturday because of "scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather", the White House said.

Most notoriously, Trump has repeatedly put himself at odds with practically the entire USA political and security establishment over Russian meddling in the 2016 Presidential Election.

French President Emmanuel Macron warned about nationalism during his speech at the ceremony.

"Though sadly he did not make it, he was among the countless young men who never returned home, but through their sacrifice, they ascended to peace in heaven", President Trump said.

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism: nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism", Macron said in a 20-minute address delivered from under the Arc de Triomphe.

Trump and Macron avoided any criticism of each other in front of the media.

She had slogans written on her chest that included the words "Fake" and "Peace".

The president and first lady Melania Trump traveled separately from most of the other presidents and dignitaries attending the event, who had gathered earlier at the Elysee Palace and traveled to the ceremony by bus. Putin also flashed Trump a thumbs-up sign and patted Trump's arm.

Remembered for brutal trench warfare and the first use of chemical weapons, WWI pitted the armies of France, the British empire, Russian Federation and the US against a German-led coalition that included the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires. At the war's end, the USA had 2 million troops in Europe and another 2 million ready to cross the Atlantic if needed, a force that turned the United States into a major military power whose soldiers then fought and died again for Europe in World War II.
