An American is reported to have been killed with arrows by the tribal people of a restricted island of Andaman, police said on Wednesday.

A U.S. tourist is believed to have been killed by an isolated Indian island tribe known to fire at outsiders with bows and arrows, Indian police said.

"A murder case has been registered", a police officer told Reuters news agency. Before this, the U.S. national had reportedly visited the Andaman Islands five times and meant to meet the tribe.

Dependera Pathak, director-general of police on India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, said seven fishermen have been arrested for helping the American visit North Sentinel Island, where the killing occurred.

Contact with several tribes on the Andaman islands, set deep in the Indian Ocean, is illegal in a bid to protect their indigenous way of life and shield them from diseases.

"When a USA citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts".

The Sentinelese people that inhabit the island are known to act hostile to visitors, often attacking them.

Amazon did not mention the Long Island City opportunity zone tax breaks Tuesday in any of its announcements about the new campus. In the past few days, however, the company opted for a surprise switch, divvying up its second headquarters between two places.

Andaman Sheekha, a local newspaper in Andaman island, claimed Sentinelese tribe to be behind the incident.

Chau made two or three trips to the island by canoe from November 15, making contact with the tribe but returning to his boat.

Chau was reportedly a missionary and had visited the isolated island five times, in his attempts to meet the tribe's members. As of nightfall, they were still trying to recover his body. But on the morning of the following day, the waiting fishermen watched from a distance as the tribesmen dragged Chau's body.

The source, who asked not to be named, said Chau wrote that he was "doing this to establish the kingdom of Jesus on the island ..." Meanwhile, the arrested fishermen have been booked under Protection of Aboriginal Tribes act and various other sections of IPC.

A profile on The Outbound Collective that appears to belong to him mentioned that he liked exploring and talked about " finding a rumoured waterfall in the jungles of the Andamans".

The Sentinelese are known to resist outsiders.

They were filmed firing arrows at a helicopter back in 2004 and killed two fishermen who drifted accidentally into their waters in 200. Following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, when rescuers flew overhead to check for survivors their helicopter was repelled by repeated volleys of arrows from the tribespeople, widely considered 'the most risky tribe in the world'.
